By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

(P) Perform the underhand serve during practice and game play using proper form, making the serve over the net 2 out of 4 times. (NASPE #1; MA CF 2.17; #1, #2, Game play) ( C)Explain how the placement of the is serve is important during game play with 100% accuracy when asked by the teacher at the end of class. (NASPE #2; MA CF 2.17; Closure) (A) Respect your teammates and communicate with them in a positive way to make a team cohesion to help throughout gameplay. Attendance: Ss will enter the gym after changing in the locker room and go directly to their teams and sit in a line where Mary Murray will take attendance.

Warm up: Ss will not be taking a 2 minute jog. They will spread out and be lead by the student leaders and perform 1 set of 10 jumping jacks 1 set of 10 push-ups 1 set of 10 crunches Transition: Students will hustle into the teacher for introduction. Start- one whistle Stop-two whistles Safety: Be aware of students and other equipment. Also make sure there isnt anything on the gym floor that the students could slip on. Teachers will explain the skill cues for Underhand Serve - Face target - Hold ball with your nonstriking hand. -Step with opposite foot of striking hand -Bring your striking hand back - Strike ball with a closed fist or heel of palm -Follow through toward target **Do not toss ball in the air during the striking motion Overhand Serve( For students who are interested in trying) -Align shoulders square to the net facing the target area. -Step forward with the foot opposite the striking/serving hand -Toss the ball, 3-4 feet above your head and in front of the serving shoulder -Keep eyes on the ball -Strike the ball with an open hand or heel of palm in one continuous motion (swing through the ball)

-Follow through -Transfer weight from your back foot to the front foot ** Teacher will have Ss demonstrate the skill cues after the teacher has demonstrated for the underhand serve. Also T will see if there are any volleyball players in the class that could demonstrate either the underhand serve or overhand serve. Questions: 1) When serving what kind of strategy do you want to have? 2) What line on the volleyball court do you serve behind? 21-22 min Transitions: Ss will have 10 seconds to find a partner within their teams who they would work best with. One partner will go get a volleyball. Activity: #1 Students will get into partners and will be two steps behind the attack line on either side of the net. Students will underhand serve over the net. Will be standing on the other attack line. Students will be split up between the two courts. The other student will only catch the serve and serve back over to their partner. Extensions: Up: Move back away from the net Down: Move in closer to the net, but not too close where students cannot perform the serve OR have student practice on the wall. Just trying to hit the same square or block for each hit. Transition: Students will stay on their sides of the nets where they were from the first activity. The students who were on there side is their team. 2525:30 min Activity #2 Students will get in a line before the service line. One student will underhand serve to the other side of the court. Once the volleyball hits in the court that student will sit where the volleyball hit. The next student will serve and try to get the ball to the player so they can catch it or touch it. When that happens the student who just served will go sit on the other side next to their teammate. The next person will continue to serve. The students team goal is whoever has the longest chain of students sitting in the court at the end of the time wins. Students will be give a time limit to make the chain in 1 minutes. *Students be aware of others serving when walking over to the court. Demonstration: Teacher will pick 5 competent students to demonstrate to show the students how to serve and form the chain to be proficient during activity 2. Transition: Students will have 15 seconds to get into their game play teams and will be placed at a court by the teacher. Three students will go and put the extra volleyballs back into the bag.

Activity #3: Students will practice all their skills learned (bumping, setting, and serving) and go through a S S round robin tournament.
