Morgardshammar roller guides - his.tory:
The inventor Erik Norlindh carried out the first trials with a "new entry guide" equipped with rollers in 1940-41 at SKF Hofors, where he was employed.
In 1942 Erik orlindh moved to Hellefors. There he continued his trials and in 1943 the first patents were applied for. On September 25, 1944, Erik Norlindh was employed by Morgardshamrnar, and consequently Morgardsharnmar aquired the patents from HeJlefors for the manufacture of roller guides.
The first roller guide was received in late 1944. The order comprised four roller guides of numb r 9-30 and was delivered to Hellefors under order number 44-4127. More roller guides of type number 5-12 were delivered in 1945
Morgardshammar - history:
Morgardshamrnar, a company with nne old traditions, hails back to the thirteenth century, when a small blast furnac and a water driven forge for the production of wrought iron were stablished. In 1856 the business was reorganised under the name of Morgardsharnmar AB, and a foundry and a machine shop for the manufacture of equipment for mines and iron works were installed. Since then the company has developed into an important, globally recognised manufacturing unit.
Roller guide numbers 5-12, 9-30, 30-60, 60-85 and 85-125 were produced until 1952. At this time the guides were redesigned and the series numbers 12 to 310 were created.
nUL 1952 roller guides were included in new Morgardshammar rolling mills. However, around this time roller guides made by Morgardsharnmar achieved such worldwide recognition that more and more customers operating rolling mills made by other manufacturers started to buy the guides from Morgardshammar,
Since then several new generations of roller guides have been developed. Morgardshammar, a leading manufacturer of roller guide equipment for hot rolling mills. Today offers a complete system of guides.

· Morgardshammar guide systems - Our product range
The original series
From 1952 until the late 1970s, Morgardshammar produced one basic series of roller guides, the well reputed standard series in 10 sizes from type 12 to 310. These guides were sold in great numbers to rolling mills worldwide.
With the introduction of faster continuous rolling mills, the demands on guide equipment gave rise to new trends in order to control the higher speed ranges and cater for easy and quick changeability of guide equipment. The result of this was a new series of roller guides which today is known as the 800 series. Now there was a product especially designed for cassette mounting.
All the other features which made Morgardshammar guides world famous, such as strength and durability, were well retained, In all future developments we have taken and continue [0 take great care to maintain these standards.
Cassette mounting has become one of the major improvements concerning handling of guide equipment in modern rolling technology. Our company has had a leading function in the development of cassettes and adjustable bases. They are available for use in single or multiple stand mills. Cassettes are made with fixed or adjustable bases to allow accurate centring of the guides in relation to the pass hoe.
In earlier times the company mainly concentrated on the production of entry roller guides. However, modern continuous rolling mills demanded exit twist roUer guides. These were added to our production programme in the 1960s and soon achieved the same excellent reputation as our entry roller guides.
Profile roller guides were later introduced into the product range, catering for the guiding of sections such as channels and angles. A complete range of guides for flats is also available, both for guiding into flat or edging passes.
To complete the programme of rolling mill guides under the umbrella of "Guide Systems", a range of static entry and delivery guides was also created based on the same standards as the roller guides. This enables the user to utilise the same cassettes and makes it possible to change from static to roller guide and vice versa in no extra time.
In recent decades the technology of slitting bars into multiple strands from one billet has become a great task in guiding technique, due to the fact that this technology will boost the productivity of old rolling mills without major capital investment. We at Morgardsharnmar have developed such equipment for the slitting of bars into two, three and four strands.
Modern guiding requires excellent auxiliary equipment and here we like to point out setting tools and fixtures both for mechanical and optical setting of the guides. Also lubrication is of major importance, especially in high speed rolling. Here we supply oil/air lubrication systems of excellent quality.

Roller entry guide 800-s~ries
A compact roller guide design with all the established Morgardshamrnar features, such as a precision cast alloyed guide box and drop forged spring steel
roller holders of high elasticity.
The 800 series compared to the more modern 900 series has no central adjustment, but with all the other outstanding features of Morgardshammar technique, it is the ideal equipment for the cost-conscious customer.
Roller entry guide gOO-series
This series, created in the 1980s, features central symmetrical adjustment of the guide rollers as the major development
All other features typical of Morgardshamrnar guides are fully incorporated, such as drop forged roller holders, in spring steel quality. This is to enable thicket front and tail ends to pass through the guide without disturbing the original setting.
All guides of this series are available as single (one pair of guide rollers) or double (two pairs of guide rollers) roller guides. The double roller guide version has a unique Morgardsharnmar feature, which is four individual roller holders, one for each roller. This technique allows each guide roller to be set horizontally and vertically, and also provides better bar control during rolling.
Single point adjustment of the guide roller during mill operation is simply done by turtling a double acting cam wheel. By doing so the setting can be monitored to a tenth of a millimetre and is symmetrical around the pass line. This is true of both types, the single and double guide version.
Preloaded high speed ball bearings are
used in the smaller guides for application in wire rod mills. For the larger guides heavy duty tapered roller bearings are used, as these guides mainly perform in roughing and intermediate sections of the rolling mill. Special care has been taken for the provision of sufficient lubri-
cating and cooling water channels which are well integrated into the design.
All parts and components are of simple design to assure low replacement cost and easy maintenance.
Morgardshammar sets a new dimension in roller guide technology. We are introducing our newest technology in guide equipment which guarantees the easiest possible operational handling.
Based on our well proven 900 series roller guide design and following on from successful traditions of Morgardshammar in roller guide manufacturing, such as roller holders in spring steel quality, a shaft bearing arrangement for long production life and simple maintenance, we are now introducing a new technology for guide setting with absolute accuracy. In this solution the patented cam wheel is lilted with a worm wheel drive for precise setting in both adjustment made, the initial setting in the guide shop and the adjusting in the rolling mill.
Double Roller Guides 1 ODD-series
,",.~ Roller entry guide 1 OOO-series
Naturally this roller guide series is available in single or double roller design. With this new design special attention has been paid to mounting the guides into the mill stands. Bases can be fitted either to the bottom or the side of the guide in order to fit horizontal or vertical stands. The same applies for cassette mounting. There is no easier way to solve your guiding problems. In addition we would like to mention that the gui.des are well suited to the use of remote setting.

Exit twist roller guides
Over the past 30 years there has been a strong demand to increase production capacity in rolling mills with low capital investment. Based on this request the creation of the slitting process has developed. We at Morgardshammar Guide Systems have worked with this technique since the beginning and we are now able to offer complete 'Iines of equipment for the various demands in slit rolling
The slitting technology enables the production of two or more bars from one billet and can be applied to almost any kind of rolling mill,
Slitting gives a substantial increase in production rate, a reduction in the number of mill stands and reduced operating cost.
'i:. Roller guide 0820
For many years Morgardshamrnar has been equipping wire rod blocks with guides of this series. A well designed bearing arrangement which features pre-loaded roller bearings has convinced customers worldwide of it's outstanding performance.
Block roller guides are made completely in stainless steel. As a typical Morgardshammar product, the design is simple but solid and guarantees positive guiding. Cooling and lubrication media are feel directly to the guide though the adapter. No hose connections are necessary unless required,
For certain applications in the very high speed range we recommend nose pieces into the finishing passes. This prevents bent front ends from hitting the roll collar, thus avoiding cobbles. Rolling speeds of up to 120 m/s are achived.
Single Roller Guides 0820
The design of the roller guides for high speed applications, such as wire rod mills, requires certain characteristics in order to fulfil the high demands in high speed rolling. When it comes to precise setting, this means a close tolerance finish on all parts. Much attention has to be paid to the bearing arrangement in order to withstand the extreme high speed requirements.
Morgardsharnmar has two different lines of high speed roller guides that live up to these high demands: the long tried and tested 800 series and the new single point adjusted 1000 series type. The 1000 series is available both as two and four roller type.
The two different lines are both well balan-
ced and outstandingly fulfil the required specifications .. The Morgardsharnmar roller guides are used today in applications up
to 110 rn/s in continuous rolling mills but are designed for speeds up to 140 m/s .
The design of the Morgardshammar high speed roller guides were based on the following factors:
• Simple design and easy adjustment.
• Minimized and standardized components
• Stainless steel matenal in order to withstand the severe environment in a 'WRB.
• The roller bearings must permit quick acceleration to very high rolling speeds.
• The distance between guide roller and work rolls must be as short as possible.
• The entry guide halves should be flushed with cooling water in order to keep them free of scale.
Precise setting of guides calls for precise setting tools. An accurate setting of a block roller guide is crucial. Morgardsharnrnar has developed and can provide the correct setting toll. There are two optical setting systems available.
The first optical setting system, as shown, has the image of the roller projected, with magnification, onto a template to compare the setting to the theoretical correct groove. The other optical system, the HiLine®, uses a camera and computer program instead of the template. The Hi-Une® optical system is a product provided in co-operation with Daniell Automation.
in the roll stand. In order to avoid misalignment between the setting on the bench and the setting in the roll stand there is a calibrated adjusting piece, which can be seen in the image below
In addition to the optical bench, the optical centring projector is also available. The centring projector with its lamp SOUI'Ce is used to centre the base plate on the guide mounting system on the wire rod block stand. It is also used for setting the roll gap
The rolling of different shapes and sections requires a variety of different guides and especially different roller guides, Morgardshammar is able to offer almost any kind of guide required in modern rolling technology.
