AS Biology Mark scheme for the question; Outline the need for transport systems in multicellular animals.

Six of the following:            

Group B

In unicellular organisms transport substances need only occur over very short distances. Multicellular organisms are larger are usually metabolically more active. Some parts of the body are distant from the medium in which it lives/ substances need to travel distances. Distances too great for diffusion/ diffusion too slow; Diffusion is only efficient over short distances; The surface area to volume ratio is too small; For the uptake of oxygen and nutrients. Diffusion alone is often not sufficient to effectively remove carbon dioxide/ urea/ waste products. A transport system is required to distribute substances (give named examples); Quickly; And in sufficient quantities. Give named examples of systems and processes which operate efficiently.
