OREGON HEALTH AUTHORITY RELEASES STATEWIDE DATA ON INCIDENTS OF OSTEOSARCOMA
The Oregon Health Authority has indicated that by the end of the business day today they will be providing the data which I requested last month concerning the occurrence of osteosarcoma state-wide over the past few years. West Salem families have been greatly impacted by this disease. Osteosarcoma is a very rare form of bone cancer and the causes are unknown. Last summer the Federal Environmental Protection Agency did an environmental assessment of specific parks and gathering areas in West Salem but found no evidence of any contaminants which would explain the high occurrence of this cancer in West Salem. Because of the low frequency of this cancer, I asked the Oregon Health Authority to give the parents and families information on the state-wide frequency of osteosarcoma over the last few years. This information sheds no specific light on the possible causes of this rare cancer. I hope it will give context to those who are interested in getting as much information as possible. The data will be sent to the families first and then it will be provided to the media. ###
