Standard Test Method for

Theoretical Maximum Specific Gravity and Density of Paving Mixtures

Significance & Use

The theoretical maximum specific gravities and densities are used to calculate values for percent air voids in compacted bituminous paving mixtures and influence the composition of mixtures in terms of types, amounts of aggregates and bituminous materials. They provide target values for the compaction of paving mixtures. They are essential for calculating the amount of bitumen absorbed by the internal porosity of aggregates in the mixture.

Apparatus & Calibration

Vacuum pump or water aspirator. Volumetric Flask 4000 mL. The calibration of flasks bowls is by filling the flask with water of 251 degree centigrade and take the mass.

Test Sample

Obtain the sample according to test method D 979. The size of the sample shall confirm with the nominal maximum size of the aggregate.

Procedure

Heat the sample to 110(+/-5) degrees celsuis. Separate the particles by hand taking care to avoid fracturing the aggregate. Particles of the fine portion of the paving mixture shall not be larger than (6.0)mm. Cool the sample to room temperature. Determine the weight of the sample to be tested and place the sample in the container mentioned above.

Procedure

Cover the sample with water at a temperature approximately 25 degrees Celsius. Remove the trapped air by applying increased vacuum until residual pressure manometer reads 27 2.5 mm of Hg. Maintain this residual pressure for 15 2 minutes.

Procedure

Gently release the vacuum and proceed with the following: (1) Suspend the container & contents in a water bath & determine the mass after 10(+-1) min immersion. Submerge bowl and sample in the water bath at temperature 25(+/-1) for 101 min.

Procedure

Determine the mass of the container, contents and water completely filled within 10(+-1) min.

Calculation

Weighing in water: Dry mass / Dry mass Mass of water displaced by sample at 25degrees.
Weighing in air: Dry mass / (Dry mass + Mass of container filled with water at 25degrees) Mass of container with sample and water at 25degrees.
