Interesting facts about banana Health corner

After reading this, youll never look at a banana in the same way again Bananas contain three natural sugars sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Canadian Society of Pediatrics state that infants aged 0-2 years should not have any exposure to technology, 3-5 years be restricted to one hour per day, and 6-18 years restricted to 2 hours per day (AAP 2001/13, CPS 2010). Children and youth use 45 times the recommended amount of technology, with serious and often life threatening consequences (Kaiser Foundation 2010, Active Healthy Kids Canada 2012). Handheld devices (cell phones, tablets, electronic games) have dramatically increased the accessibility and usage of technology, especially by very young children (Common Sense Media, 2013). As a pediatric occupational therapist, I'm calling on parents, teachers and governments to ban the use of all handheld devices for children under the age of 12 years. Following are 10 research-based reasons for this ban. Please visit zonein.ca to view the Zone'in Fact Sheet for referenced research. Continue page 2

generation many of whom will not outlive their parents (Professor Andrew Prentice, BBC News 2002). 4. Sleep Deprivation 60% of parents do not supervise their child's technology usage, and 75% of children are allowed technology in their bedrooms (Kaiser Foundation 2010). 75% of children aged 9 and 10 years are sleep deprived to the extent that their grades are detrimentally impacted (Boston College 2012). 5. Mental Illness Technology overuse is implicated as a causal factor in rising rates of child depression, anxiety, attachment disorder, attention deficit, autism, bipolar disorder, psychosis and problematic child behavior (Bristol University 2010, Mentzoni 2011, Shin 2011, Liberatore 2011, Robinson 2008). One in six Canadian children have a diagnosed mental illness, many of whom are on dangerous psychotropic medication (Waddell 2007). 6. Aggression Violent media content can cause child aggression (Anderson, 2007). Young children are increasingly exposed to rising incidence of physical and sexual violence in today's media. "Grand Theft Auto V" portrays explicit sex, murder, rape, torture and mutilation, as do many movies and TV shows. The U.S. has categorized media violence as a Public Health Risk due to causal impact on child aggression (Huesmann 2007). Media reports increased use of restraints and seclusion rooms with children who exhibit uncontrolled aggression. 7. Digital dementia High speed media content can contribute to attention deficit, as well as decreased concentration and memory, due to the brain pruning neuronal tracks to the frontal cortex (Christakis 2004, Small 2008). Children who can't pay attention can't learn. 8. Addictions As parents attach more and more to technology, they are detaching from their children. In the absence of paren-

tal attachment, detached children can attach to devices, which can result in addiction (Rowan 2010). One in 11 children aged 8-18 years are addicted to technology (Gentile 2009). 9. Radiation emission In May of 2011, the World Health Organization classified cell phones (and other wireless devices) as a category 2B risk (possible carcinogen) due to radiation emission (WHO 2011). James McNamee with Health Canada in October of 2011 issued a cautionary warning stating "Children are more sensitive to a variety of agents than adults as their brains and immune systems are still developing, so you can't say the risk would be equal for a small adult as for a child." (Globe and Mail 2011). In December, 2013 Dr. Anthony Miller from the University of Toronto's School of Public Health recommend that based on new research, radio frequency exposure should be reclassified as a 2A (probable carcinogen), not a 2B (possible carcinogen). American Academy of Pediatrics requested review of EMF radiation emissions from technology devices, citing three reasons regarding impact on children (AAP 2013).

Violent media content can cause child aggression.

1. Rapid brain growth Between 0 and 2 years, infant's brains triple in size, and continue in a state of rapid development to 21 years of age (Christakis 2011). Early brain development is determined by environmental stimuli, or lack thereof. Stimulation to a developing brain caused by overexposure to technologies (cell phones, internet, iPads, TV), has been shown to negatively affect executive functioning and cause attention deficit, cognitive delays, impaired learning, increased impulsivity and decreased ability to selfregulate, e.g. tantrums (Small 2008, Pagini 2010). 2. Delayed Development Technology use restricts movement, which can result in delayed development. One in three children now enter school developmentally delayed, negatively impacting literacy and academic achievement (HELP EDI Maps 2013). Movement enhances attention and learning ability (Ratey 2008). Use of technology under the age of 12 years is detrimental to child development and learning (Rowan 2010). 3. Epidemic Obesity TV and video game use correlates with increased obesity (Tremblay 2005). Children who are allowed a device in their bedrooms have 30% increased incidence of obesity (Feng 2011). One in four Canadian, and one in three U.S. children are obese (Tremblay 2011). 30% of children with obesity will develop diabetes, and obese individuals are at higher risk for early stroke and heart attack, gravely shortening life expectancy (Center for Disease Control and Prevention 2010). Largely due to obesity, 21st century children may be the first

10. Unsustainable The ways in which children are raised and educated with technology are no longer sustainable (Rowan 2010). Children are our future, but there is no future for children who overuse technology. A team-based approach is necessary and urgent in order to reduce the use of technology by children. Protestantism and Romanism are shaking hands

Many of you have seen the video from Amazing Facts with Doug Batchelor analyzing Pope's recent threat of 'Unity or Else." The video has been posted at the end of February and reposted by many.

time. He sees his mission as building the bridge for all evangelicals to come into full, corporate and recognizable unity with the Bishop of Rome. He, then introduced the special personal video recording from the Pope himself. Pope Francis began in English, greeting all, and then switched to Italian, with English subtitles, telling viewers that this spontaneous message was well prepared and translated for viewers. Francis described the current state of Christianity as one of separated families. The most striking was his metaphor of the reunion between Joseph and his brothers in Egypt. While the brothers journeyed to Egypt to buy food, they in fact discovered a long lost family member. Hinting that all the churches outside of Rome are brothers with money, but no bread, and only if all come to Egypt, to him the saving Joseph, we could get the bread. After the message Ken Copeland, called Tony Palmer on the stage again and asked him to record a video message back to the pope, affirming their desire to be one. In his speech he admitted that when he began ministry in 1960s this would have been impossible. Yet today it is a reality. As I watched the video, I was reminded of the warning given by Ellen White in 1884 Protestantism will yet stretch her hand across the gulf to grasp the hand of Spiritualism; she will reach over the abyss to clasp hands with the Roman power; and under the influence of this threefold union, our country will follow in the steps of Rome in trampling on the rights of conscience. (Spirit of Prophecy, Vol.4, p.405) We were foretold that events like this will take place as the world moves toward emerging Image of Revelation 13. Yet the swiftness of following events surprised me. On Sunday, March 9, 2014, another influential pastor, Ulf Ekman, who introduced Sweden to the prosperity -

It all started when at a recent meeting of ministers associated with the prosperity -preaching Word of Faith branch of charismatic Christianity, Ken Copeland surprised all gathered on January 21, 2014 with a personal message from Pope Francis, delivered by his personal friend, Anglican bishop Tony Palmer. By all measures it was a historic moment. At this meeting in Texas, held by invitation only, Ken Copelan d introduced Tony Palmer as a special surprise. Bishop Palmer belongs to one of the many Anglican schism groups, called Anglican Episcopal Communion. He also is introduced as a leading member of EuroChurch, a confederation of Protestant Evangelical leaders working in Europe, where he is listed as representative of the Celtic Anglican Tradition, which have embraced a bogus historical theory that there is a pure strand of British Christianity which dates right back to the Roman times when Coptic Christians brought Christianity to the British Isles along with Joseph of Arimathea who came to Glastonbury as a missionary.

In 1960s this would have been impossible. Ken Copeland

This Anglican legend has been promoted because they then claim that from the beginning there was a pure British church that was not tainted by Roman corruption. In essence, it is a claim to be a remnant of the true original faith. Tony Palmer enthusiastically reminded all gathered that the true church is catholic, meaning universal, and we all are universal, hence, catholic. He argued that the protest is over since the Lutheran churches had signed peace with Rome in the 1990s, hence, Protestantism is a thing of the past, unnecessary rudiment, and those who still protest are out of place and

emphasizing Word of Faith movement when he founded Word of Life Ministries and Word of Life Church, announced to 3,300 members congregaon in Uppsala, Sweden, that he and his wife Birgia had converted to Catholicism, and it is the only way toward Chrisan unity. Imagine his Pastor Ulf Ekman inuence as the leader of Charismac movement for over 30 years, in saying that we all need to move toward organizaonal unity. This is just the beginning of wider trend of protestant churches returning to the Roman church.

It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chroniclercases. It also neutralizes over -acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach. TEMPERATURE CONTROL: Many other cultures see bananas as a cooling fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

Interesting facts about banana

Health corner
Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the worlds leading athletes. But energy isnt the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

A banana really is a natural remedy for many ills.

DEPRESSION: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier. PMS: Forget the pills eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood. ANEMIA: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia. BLOOD PRESSURE: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruits ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke. BRAIN POWER: 200 students at a Twickenham school ( England ) were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert. CONSTIPATION: High in fiber, including bananas in the

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has FOUR TIMES the protein, TWICE the carbohydrate, THREE TIMES the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals.. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, A BANANA a day keeps the doctor away!

Church Urges Appropriate Conversation About Sex

No other denomination today is better positioned to reclaim the spirituality of sexuality than the Seventh-day Adventist Church, a theology professor said at the churchs sexuality summit in Cape Town, South Africa, held from March 17 to 20. John Nixon In a series of three morning devotionals, John Nixon, professor of Religion and Spirituality at Southern Adventist University, said dysfunctional attitudes toward sex among Christians are the result of alien influences that undermine and distort the teachings of Jesus. His last devotional began with an account of a meeting he and another university official had with a student who was addicted to pornography. The student replied to their counsel: You've already taken sex away from us and now you're trying to take this away, too! This remark illustrates the current common view that chastity and celibacy are unreasonable expectations. Contrast that with the Bible view that there is an ample reward from giving your sexuality to God. Weve been lax in teaching Christian sexuality in our churches, schools and homes. This is the root of the sexual crisis we are now facing. Even the word sex spoken from the pulpit makes us uncomfortable, Nixon said. The spectrum of teaching about sex in the church is limited to extremeslove without sex (abstinence) and sex without love (promiscuity). The Bible rejects them both, he told delegates at the churchs In Gods Image: Scripture. Sexuality. Society summit at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in South Africa. A brief historical overview helped explain how broken attitudes toward sex gained a foothold in the church. Hellenistic thought, Nixon said, pitted the spiritual world against the material world; thus a good soul was trapped in an evil body with sinful desires. Christian writings and practices of the second and third centuries A.D. reveal an obsession with asceticism, or severe physical debasement as a measure of spirituality. Saint Augustine (354-430 A.D.) argued that all sin was rooted in sexuality and advocated procreation only without recreation. Asceticism glorified hardships and taught that because the body was evil, all physical enjoyment should be eschewed, including sex within marriage. This notion encouraged the practice of celibacy among Christians, Nixon said. The vestiges of this philosophy still exist in our church,

Nixon said. For many of us, there is still something a little suspicious about sexual pleasure, even in marriage. Engage in it, we think, but dont have too much fun. But God does not forbid or even just tolerate sex, Nixon said. He celebrates it in the context of pure, genuine love between husband and wife. Indeed, the union of husband and wife within the sacred institution of marriage is a full expression of the plural image of God, he said, citing Genesis 1:26 and 27. We are relational creatures made to complement each other. Sex is not just an act; it is part of our beings, Nixon said. We do not teach a divided human naturea soul trapped in a body. We teach a holistic nature. Sex, which is physical, also impacts the spirit and mind, Nixon said. Still, challenges persist in teaching biblical sexuality in homes, schools and churchesespecially in a sacred institution of marriage world that views any act between consenting adults as permissible, he said. On Adventist college campuses, Nixon said he has observed that students are increasingly concerned about gender identity and often view sexual choices through the lens of social justice. All too often, he said, the Adventist Church has chosen silence rather than engaging in the conversation. Our children learn about sex from the world. They grow up in a world of alternative sexuality as the new normal. Sex [for them] is about self-gratification, about the happiness I am entitled to, Nixon said. He told the story of Joseph recorded in Genesis to illustrate that chastity and celibacy are indeed attainable goals. Joseph, he said, demonstrated integrity and faithfulness even in the face of major temptations. Sexual sin lends itself to secrecy where no one sees, but private moments are the ones that reveal true character, Nixon said.

Advenst parents, teachers and pastors have the responsibility to pass on a healthy view of sex within the parameters of heterosexual marriage, he said. May God help us to fulll that responsibility.

Global Youth Day and Brantford Trip

By Virginia Polihronova This past March 15th presented a special opportunity for youth all around the world to go and spread the joy of Jesus in their surrounding community. The purpose of this annual event called Global Youth Day is to go out and 'be the sermon' by helping people who are in need. Thousands of SDA youth around the world participated, including the youth from London who were involved in this annual event for a second year. Last year our youth went to visit the Watford nursing home to fellowship with the elderly residing there. It was a blessing for them as well as us. This year however we decide to do something different. We ventured out on the streets in the cold Canadian weather to serve hot chocolate to random pedestrians in hopes of warming their hearts. It was a huge success.

random act of kindness and that there was in fact nothing wrong with the hot chocolate. As a matter of fact, it was rather tasty. The people's faces lit up and gladly accepted the warm beverage. Soon a whole crowd had formed around the booth, and it was clear that everybody was happy. It was amazing to see how such a small good deed was enough to turn their day around. The youth would like to thank the youth leaders and all who helped in organizing this event for us that we may be strengthened in our spiritual faith.

The very next week, we went to spend the Sabbath with the youth from the Brantford church. There was lots of interesting discussion in the Sabbath school about how God can use us as his disciples to harvest people from the world for his kingdom. We led the morning with songs and a skit, and then Kirmane preached his powerful sermon entitled, I am not Ashamed.

Youth from London leading the morning service at SDA Brantford Church.

Jorge, Virginia, Helen and Kasha on Dundas Street, London ON

Later that day, we hosted an AY vespers where Alonso taught the youth about following Jesus and church planting with a fun activity. We would like to thank everyone who organized and helped in making this trip possible. It was a blessing for our youth as well as the youth in Brantford.

As we were setting up our station on the sidewalk, we were met with many curious looks. We put up our sign that read FREE HOT CHOCOLATE and it felt as though people were reluctant to come at first. Is this really free?, several people asked in disbelief. One man even said There must be something wrong with this hot chocolate since it's free. We explained to them that our church was performing a
