Running head: LITERACY AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE EARLY YEARS OF EDUCATION3 This paper will examine the idea of bringing technology into the classrooms of early childhood education. I will discuss the facts and opinions provided by Karen McLean followed by my opinion and a brief conclusion. Literacy and technology in the classroom for early learners might scare some parents into thinking that their child will not be able to learn necessary social skills, if they are always on technology. In Karen McLeans article Literacy and Technology in the Early Years of Education: Looking to the Familiar to Inform Educator Practice she discusses how children not only respond positively to technology in the classroom but learn more effectively when technology is introduced to them. When technologies are viewed as conductors of communication, there is potential for a mutually beneficial relationship between literacy and technology to be realized (McLean, 30). Although the concept of literacy has changed over the years, many educators look to old teachings of what it is to be literate in todays classrooms. The world is changing quickly and it is imperative that teachers can adapt and keep up with the times. Introducing technology to early learners could be that step teachers should take; technology will not be a distraction but an aid to help them teach and give their students a better understanding on what is it to be literate. In my opinion, I never thought it was beneficial to have technology in the classroom especially for young children. After reading this article however I think that technology could aid in young childrens learning and literacy. As a future early childhood teacher, I will definitely consider having technology as part of my lesson to help my students as well as myself. Technology and literacy go hand in hand. In todays society it is necessary to have technology in the classroom at any age, including early childhood.
