Congress to repeal laws discriminatory to women
Lawmakers want all existing laws with provisions that are discriminatory to women be amended and or repealed as mandated by the Magna Carta of Women. Reps. Lino Cayetano (2nd istrict! Cayetano cited 4ection 52 of R* ,65- or the Magna Carta of Women! which explicitly provides that the 4tate shall take steps to review and amend or repeal if necessary existing laws that are discriminatory to women within three years from the effectivity of the *ct. 7"he Magna Carta of Women defines discrimination against women as any gender8 based distinction! excl#sion! or restriction which has the effect or p#rpose of impairing or n#llifying the recognition! en3oyment! or exercise by women! irrespective of their marital stat#s! on a basis of e1#ality of men and women! of h#man rights and f#ndamental freedoms in the political! economic! social! c#lt#ral! civil! or any other field!9 Cayetano said. Cayetano said the +o#se Committees on Women and /ender 01#ality and (op#lation and 2amily Relations and other concerned +o#se bodies cond#cted hearings and sponsored bills on the amendment or repeal of provisions contained in several pieces of legislation! which are discriminatory to women and women:s rights. 7"here is still a need for a contin#o#s review of discriminatory provisions against women in vario#s existing laws to ens#re that the f#ll h#man rights of women! as g#aranteed by the Constit#tion and by international conventions to which the (hilippines is a party8signatory! are #pheld to enco#rage and enable active participation of women and significantly contrib#te to the national development!9 Cayetano said. Lope' said the (hilippines! as a party8signatory of the Convention on the elimination of *ll 2orms of iscrimination *gainst Women (C0 *W$! is committed to p#rs#e by all appropriate means and witho#t delay a policy of eliminating discrimination against women.
