JOINT PRESS RELEASE
Japan provides emergency assistance to UNICEF in response to the Ebola outbreak in Guinea
Conakry, April 4, 2014 - The Government of Japan has made $523,602 emergency funds available to UNICEF to support the Government of Guinea in their response to the ongoing Ebola epidemic. This donation will be used to purchase equipment and supplies to assist in the prevention and response to the outbreak. At the request of the Guinean Government and UNICEF, the Government of Japan has decided to make this donation because of the excellent relations between Japan and Guinea, and because of the urgent humanitarian needs. This support will be a long-term contribution to the protection of children and families against Ebola and other epidemics affecting the country. UNICEF will use the funds to purchase equipment already nearly exhausted by the emergency response to Ebola, namely: soap, chlorine, protection kits, sprayers, megaphones, calcium hypochlorite, and kits for diarrhea. UNICEF, which supports sustainable development, purchases, wherever possible, locally produced supplies, including soap and chlorine produced by private Guinean companies. ### About UNICEF UNICEF promotes the rights and wellbeing of every child, in everything we do. Together with our partners, we work in 190 countries and territories to translate that commitment into practical action, focusing special effort on reaching the most vulnerable and excluded children, to the benefit of all children, everywhere.
