CEMS 095 Robotics 3 credits
Summer Academy Session II Physical Meeting Times: July 14, 2014 – July 25, 2014 Monday through Thursday, Mornings from 9:00am – 12:00pm and afternoons from 1:30pm – 3:30pm Online Course Completion July 26 – August 8, 2014 Joseph Chase ph: 802-363-2168 available 30 minutes before and 1 hour after class sessions This is a course that guides the learning of beginning and intermediate students through the fascinating and interdisciplinary field of Robotics and Physical Computing. Merging the language of computer code with physical inputs and outputs results in a fascinating blend of technologies that often lead to surprising results. Students in this class will develop fluency with the physics of small robots, an understanding of physical inputs and outputs, and programming tools that enable autonomous behavior. Text: All references are online and are Open Source Lab Fee: $200 that provides the student with their own Arduino microcontroller and support materials Students will apply engineering and physics principles to analyze a problem, design, test, and evaluate solutions. 2. Students will demonstrate proficiency with basic analog and digital circuits. 3. Students will use programming tools to edit, compile, and download programs to a microcontroller. 4. Students will demonstrate proficiency in accessing custom libraries of functions to control a wide range of inputs and outputs. 5. Students will apply a variety of physical controls to affect motion, including DC gear-head Motors, Servos, and Stepper Motors. 6. Students will use a variety of sensor strategies appropriate to a given environment. 7. Student will use a variety of display technologies to enhance robot-human communication. 8. Students will identify a situation having an adverse effect on human quality of life and then design, build, and test its effectiveness. 9. Student will demonstrate proficiency in communication skills including reading and writing. 10. Students demonstrate effective online research skills. 30% Final Project: to be completed during the 2 week online portion of the course. 30% Mini-Challenges: consisting of small design challenges that showcase specific software, hardware, and skill sets. 30% Quizzes: verify proficiency levels in basic knowledge and skills. 10% Participation: includes demonstrating teamwork, collaboration, and attendance. Students are expected to be respectful to staff and peers at all times. Academic integrity is also highly valued.
