Lady Blackhawks look to stay positive and motivated

Prairie du Chien Softball Coaches: Varsity - Liz Steiner-Hall Varsity Reserve - Kate Hermsen Assistants - Brittany Kreig, Dan Morovits, and Pat Hall Returning letterwinners: Julia Pintz, Carly Mergen, Chelsea Fisher, Jamie Kozelka, and McKenzie Banasik Other Key Players: Laura DuCharme Top teams in conference: River Valley will be very tough. Keys to success: Stay positive, play as a team and stay competitive. 2013 Conference record: 4-4 Strengths: Our strengths are four seniors to motivate and push the younger girls to play their best and always be getting better. Challenges: This year we will be challenged by our small numbers and we lost key players last year. I am very optimistic that girls will be driven to fill those spots and succeed. Julia Pintz is our starting pitcher and she will need to carry a lot of the load. But with McKenzie Banasik, Carly Mergen and Chelsea Fisher behind her I think she will do great.

Soccer team working hard on skills and strategy

Coach: Adrianne Woolford Returning letterwinners: Bridget Achenbach, Mara Strandlie, Claire Stoeffler, Courtney Pattison, Kelley Heal, Katlyn Grondin, Mallory Fulcher, Erin Morovitz, Brianna Berger, Randi Lessard, Brooke Boone and Payton Davidson Other key players: There are seven newcomers to the sport this season. Top conference teams and conference outlook: Top teams are Platteville and Richland Center. We are stronger with 12 returning players, and the newcomers show great potential this early in the season. Keys to success: To continue to work hard at our skills and play strategies in passing, winning and controlling the ball. The players know the game and what to do. Now they need to execute this knowledge. Strengths and challenges: Mallory Fulcher and Mara Strandlie working our defense with their strong kicking power will help protect the goal, and with Courtney Pattisons outstanding ball handling skills, we are sure to keep control. Challenges will be to keep the team healthy and injuries to a minimum. Also having the weather and field conditions stay optimal. Anything you would like to add: Each year, our program gets stronger with great ladies joining this team. We would like to thank the school board and the staff for all the support and work they contribute to give us the opportunity to have a soccer program.

Seneca baseball team keeps striving to improve

Coach: Derek Wallin Returning letterwinners: Jordan Johnson, Ian Joy, Nate Whithey, Eric Konichek and Brady Fernette Other key players: Gavin Greene and Devin Wallin Who are some of the top teams in your conference? What is your conference outlook, goals for the season? North Crawford, De Soto, Ithaca, La Farge, and Weston. Im expecting to finish fifth or sixth this year. Goal for the season is to improve from last year. What will be the keys to your success this season? We are expecting a lot of very young players to step up this year and be able to be very competitive, with the older players to also step up and be team leaders. What was last years record? 3-11 in conference and 4-13 overall What do you consider your teams strengths and challenges? The freshman class is ready to play and make a difference right away, but that is also my challenge too because Im expecting a lot of them to come in and start right away. My upperclassmen have to be willing to push these guys to help them get better faster also, while they work on themselves. Anything you would like to add? I am really looking forward to this year even though we are rebuilding and are very young again. Im ready and willing to get this program back to the top of the conference and stay there.

Solid senior class to push River Ridge boys

Coach: Shane Sperle Years as Head Coach: 7th Season Assistant Coaches: Garth Osterday, Larry Gates, 2013 Season: The boys finished second in the Six Rivers Conference Meet ending their string of four straight conference titles. The boys had four events reach the state meet last season. Cody Witzig in the 100M along with the relay teams in the 4x100 and 4x200 (Witzig, Logan Irish, Tanner Irish, Quinn Crubel). Andy Breuer made it to state in the pole vault. Matthew Johnson hurdles, vault, jumps Tyler Udelhoven- sprints, jumps Amiel Guerrero distance Matt Clark - sprints Season Outlook: With the loss of two of the top sprinters in the area, we will look a lot at Tanner and Caleb Irish to help replace Cody Witzig and Logan Irish. We have experience in the vault back with Breuer, Jelinek, Crubel and Fischer. We also have to look for our middle distances to help score this year with Mumm, Remis and Fischer. We had young hurdlers last year that we hope mature this season into point scorers for us.

Conference outlook: Benton/ Scales Mound/Shullsburg won it last year and every team has certain strength again this season. Black Hawk and Cassville should have some good sprinters coming back this season. Albany always has good distance runners and Benton has some very good hurdlers. Belmont returns a state thrower as well. It should make for an interesting meet in May. Strengths: Vault, a solid senior class, and hard-working competitive middle distance and distance athletes. Challenges: Replacing the state sprinters and finding somebody to score in the throws this season.

Sprints, jumps strengths for River Ridge girls

Years as Head Coach: 7th Season Assistant Coaches: Garth Osterday, Larry Gates 2013 Season: The girls finished second in the Six Rivers and were Timberwolf Invite champions along with a second-place finish at the Platteville Relays. The girls had three events reach State in 2013. Taylor Crapp in the 100 along with the relay teams in the 4x200 (Crapp, Herrick, Allen, Loper and Myers) and 4x400 (Crapp, Herrick, Myers, and Emily Martin). Graduates: Jordyn Laufenberg, Jessica Fischer, Melissa Maring, Paige Schrobligen Top Returners: Seniors (5) Sarah Floyd- hurdles, vault, middle distance Meagan Herrick- middle distance, long jump, relay Taylor Crapp- triple, long, sprints Makoy Retallick- middle distance Paige Loper-sprints Juniors (8) Michelle Cliff-middle distance Emily Martin-distance, long Jenna West-sprints, vault Rylee Eckert-high, sprints Johanna Allen-vault, sprints Roni Zinkle-disc Beth Zimmer-throws Feili Heiland - throws Sophomores (7) Bridgette Myers-high jump, sprints Franci Gates-hurdles, jump Sammy Steiger-high jump, sprints Sydney Bloom-vault, sprints Karli Wachter- hurdles, high jump Tiara Durns- hurdles, throws Hunter Kisting relays Freshmen (5) Becca Breuer- sprints, jumps Darion Brooks- distance, vault Karli Jandro- sprints, jumps Olivia Breuer- jumps Taylor Linder - discus Coach: Shane Sperle

Members of the River Ridge girls track team are, front row, from left: Sydney Bloom, Rebecca Breuer, Darion Brooks, Taylor Crapp and Sammy Steiger. Second row: Kari Breuer, Jenna West, Emily Martin, Franci Gates, Paige Loper and Karli Wachter. Third row: Kari Jandro, Rylee Eckert, Hunter Kisting, Bridgette Myers, Sarah Floyd, Feli Heiland and Tia Durns. Back row: Michelle Cliff, Olivia Breuer, Taylor Linder, Roni Zinkle, Johana Allen, Meagan Herrick, Makoy Rettalick and Beth Zimmer. (Photo courtesy of Z Studio)

Strengths: We should be strong in the sprints and the jumps. We have all the girls that were on the state relay teams back this year and are hoping to improve on last seasons success with them. We should have good numbers out again this year which will help us fill all the events. Taylor Crapp is a proven scorer and should go over 1,000 career points this year if she stays healthy. Herrick is a competitive leader as well and will score lots of points for us. Areas of concern: Our main concern for the team is to stay healthy and for our hurdlers

and throwers to score points we lost with Laufenberg and Fischer. If our girls stay healthy we will have a solid team come May. Conference outlook: With the Benton/Scales Mound/ Shullsburg tri-op bringing a majority of their team back this season, they will be a favorite going into the season. The league is still loaded with state caliber athletes, led by defending state champion in the 100M Jen Wellintz from Black Hawk. With so many great girl athletes this year, points will be hard to get come the conference meet.

Head Coach: Lisa Wallin-Kapinus (17th year) Assistant Coach: Angie Check Volunteer Coach: Luke Erickson Conference: Ridge and Valley

2013 Record: Conference 8-5, Overall 9-8 Letterwinners and returning starters: Seniors: Elizabeth McCullick - Elizabeth received All Conference for the last two years. She plays first base and is our leading hitter. Holidae Bahlmann - Holidae is also a returning All Conference player. Holidae has moved from the outfield to shortstop and is now playing third base. She is very versatile. Abbey Byrne - She will be starting at second base. Juniors: Whitni Marfilius - Whitni will be our starting pitcher this year. Kelsey Kapinus - Kelsey will be catching and pitching this year. Sophomores: Jadyn Sander - Jadyn will be our leader in the outfield. She will start at centerfield. She played a very strong left field last year as a freshman. Returning or New Players: Juniors: Lexi Bird, Bethany McCullick, Jamee McCullick and Brittany Sautter Sophomores: Sara McCullick, Lenore Cauffman, Brittany Ray and Kassie May Freshmen: MiKayla Walters, Molly Heisz, Katie Friar, Bethany Sautter and Amari McCarthy Who will we miss? We will need to fill the shoes of Stephanie Check and Krystal Boylen. They were my only two seniors last year, but were instrumental in many of our wins and team chemistry.

Keys to success: After playing our first two games, it became very apparent that we will need to start hitting the ball. Hitting is one of the key components to the game of softball, but it takes a lot of confidence and mental focus. We will need to be more aggressive and relaxed at the plate and then the fun will begin! Strengths and Weaknesses: I am looking for the seniors and juniors to lead this team to finish at the top of the conference. I am happy with our freshmen and sophomore players, they are very enthusiastic and ready to take a position at anytime. Top Teams/Outlook: One of the top teams in our conference is Ithaca. They have strong hitters and an excellent pitcher. We look forward to a rematch this season.
