, is placed before the stressed syllable in a word. For example, the noun contract
is pronounced I'kontrcekt/, and the verb to contract is pronounced
Ika:rl means Ika:rl in American English and Ika:1 in British English.
iii means iii or III or something in between.
Examples: very I'veri/, ability previous
Idl/ shows that the consonant III is pronounced as a syllable. This means that
there is a short vowel (shorter than the sound) before the consonant.
Examples: little I'htdJ/, uncle I'i\IJkdll.
Idnl shows that the consonant Inl is pronounced as a syllable.
