SavannahArtsAcademyDanceDepartment c/oJulianJernigan 500WashingtonAve Savannah,GA31405 September6th,2013 ToDr.WayneRobinsonandmembersoftheGeorgiaEducationalTechnologyConsortium, IamsubmittingthisgrantproposalfromtheSavannahArtsAcademyDanceDepartment,requestingthe highestindividualamountavailable,$2500tofundtheFineArtsStudentDataCenter.Thisgrantwould fundthepurchaseofthefourMacminidesktopcomputersneededtoinitiatetheintegrationof technologyintoallfineartsdepartments,butespeciallythedancedepartment.Thisacquisitionwill ensurethatallofourstudentsregardlessofdemographicsorfinancialmeanswillhavetheopportunityto notonlybecometechnologicallyselfsufficient,butwillgarnertheskillsneededtoconceive,develop, andproduceadigitalportfoliooftheirartisticendeavors.Thisabilityisquicklybecominganecessityin thecurrenteducationaluniverse,andweatSavannahArtswouldliketohaveourstudentsatthe forefrontofthisdigitalrevolution.

Wefeelthatempoweringourstudentscreativitywiththeirowndigital credentialssupplythemwiththemostvitaltool,technologicalselfsufficiency,thatcanbepresentedto colleges,companies,orotherprospectiveemployers. ThefinancialclimateintheSavannahChathamareamirrorstheeconomicwoesoftheNational Standard,aseducationalbudgetsarereducedannually,andeconomicshortfallsoccureachandevery year,technologycontracts,specificallytimetabledreplacementofoldercomputersandworkstations oftenfallfirst,andthesituationatSavannahArtsAcademyisnotanexceptiontothis.Whilestudentsdo haveaccesstomediacenterworkstationsthesemachinesoftentakefiveminutesorlongertologinto andcreatetheuserdesktop.Manyofourstudentsmustutilizethesemachinesastheironlyoptionfor digitalcreation. Moreandmorecollegedanceprogramshavebeguntoincorporatedancetechnologyintotheir perspectivecurricula.Theseclassesincludebutarenotlimitedtomusicediting,video/photoediting, publicitymaterialsgeneration,websitedesign,anddigitalportfolio/artscuration.WeattheSavannah ArtsAcademyDanceDepartmenthavebeguntoimplementintroductionstotheseskillsinourown curriculum,buthavenotbeenabletomoveforwardbeyondtheintroductoryphaseduetotechnical limitationsinthestudentbody.Byaddingafineartsdatacenter,allstudentswillbeaffordedthe opportunitytobecomefluentintheseskillsoverthecourseoftheirfouryeartenureatourschool.By givingourstudentsalevelplayingfield,wefeelthatallofthemwillhaveamuchhigherpercentageofnot onlycollegeacceptances,butwillbecomescholarshipandfellowshiprecipients,increasingtheirability toaffordtheeducationandopportunitiesthattheydeserve. ProblemStatement
DancestudentsatSavannahArtsAcademypossessahighknowledgeofdancetechniqueand performanceabilitiesandrepresentthemselveswellinthedanceclassroom.However,inthedance industry,itiscommonpracticetobeeliminatedbasedsolelyonyourcredentials,withouteverhavingset footintoanauditionspace.Thisoccurrencecouldpreventourgraduatesfromevenbeingseenby judges,virtuallyeradicatingtheirchancesofemployment.Inaneducationalcontext,mostscholarships andfellowshipsareawardedbaseduponcredentialssubmittedviapostalmail.Withthisinmind,our studentsmustbecomedigitallyviableinconceiving,generating,andpublishingtheirprofessional materials.Itisinthiscategorythatourstudentshavelittleornoknowledge.Theyoftenstrugglejustto createapaperresume.Inthisdigitalage,ourstudentsneedtohavephysicalrepresentationsofeach andeverycomponentcontainedwithinthewebsiterepositoryasabareminimum.Whiletheypossess greattechnicalknowledgeofincorporatingtechnologyinasocialaspect,theyareunawareofhowto useskillstheseinaprofessionalsense. Agooddigitalportfolioisthemostimportantassetadancercanhave.Whenauditioning,these materialscreatethefirstimpressionthataprospectiveemployerhasofyou.Oftentimesitcandetermine whetheryousucceedorfailinyourgoaltogainemployment.Abaddigitalportfoliocreatesanegative contextforanydanceaudition.DancestudentsatSavannahArtsAcademycurrentlyonlyuse technologyinasocialcontext.Theyveryrarelyusetechnologyforproductivityandpossessavery limitedknowledgeoftheapplicationsnecessaryinordertogenerateanydigitalcredentials.Throughthe materialsawardedthroughthisgrant,thestudentswilllearnthestepsincreatingacomprehensivedigital portfolio.Acompetentportfoliocontainswellformattedresumethatiseasytoreadandunderstand,full 8x10photosthatareblackandwhiteandinfocus,andavideohighlightreelthatshowsthedancerin severaldifferentperformanceshighlightingtheirversatility.Dancestudentsneedtoknowhowtoutilize severalsystemsandprogramsinordertogeneratetheirmaterialssuccessfully.Itisimportantthatthe digitalportfolioreflectthedancersprofessionalismandmakeasolidnoteworthyfirstimpression. Mytargetaudienceis912thgradedancestudentsatSavannahArtsAcademy,theschoolatwhichI amcurrentlyemployed.Thestudentsareofvaryingdemographicsincluding,race,financialmeans, technologicalknowledge,andtechnologicalmeansinbothhardwareandsoftwareownershipand knowledge.Thetotalnumberofstudentsservedbythisprojectis86.Ofthose86,fivearemale, twelveareAfricanAmerican,oneisHispanic,sixareAsian,andtwoarePacificIslander,andtherest areCaucasianfemales.TheGPAoftheselearnersrangesfrom84.07upto98.96.Thegroupseems dispersedprettyevenlythroughouttheclassrankings.Butaftermorecarefulscrutiny,themajorityofthe studentsrepresentthemedianorcenteroftheclassrankingswiththetopthreelearnerssittingat3rd, 37th,and40thwiththebottomthreelearnerssittingat173rd,181st,and188thintheirrespective

classes.

ProjectDesign
Thefollowingobjectivebasedoutlineincludesmajortasks/activitiesthatarebrokendowninto enabling/easiersubactivitiestoensurelearnercompliance.Allactivitiesshouldtake30minutesper terminalobjective.Howeverifthestudentdoesnotcurrentlypossessthecompletedcredentialsthen theywillhavetogeneratethem.Thatprocesswillbeconsiderablylengthierandcanbeincludedas supplementalinstructionaldocuments.Thetimelineforproducingadditionaldocumentscanbedefined astakingtwo90minuteinstructionalperiodsperitem(highlightreel,choreographyreel,headshots,and fullbodyshotsandresume).Thetotalnumberofclassestostartfromscratchis15instructionalperiods of90minuteseach.Moststudentshavebeenrequiredtocreateadigitalresumeduringthespringof theirsophomoreyear,whileupperclassmentypicallyhaveheadshotsandfullbodydanceshotsintheir possession.Itwillbeanextremelyrarecaseforastudenttohavetostartfromabsolutescratch.Inthis event,instructionalmaterialscanbeprovidedthatwillhelpthembegintogeneratetheirownphotosand videos. Thetotalbudgetfortheprojectis$3,061.68.Therearezerotrainingcostduetothefactthatthe projectwillbedirectedbyJulianJernigan,whoisalreadytrainedinthesubjectmatterandhas developedtheprojectasawrittencourse,andwillbecreatingthesameinstructionalprojectasadigital learningenvironmentforthestudentsdescribedinthetargetpopulation.Thefirsthalfoftheorderis listedbelowasascreenshotfromtheAppleStoreforEducationandincludeseducationalpricingand freeshipping.Themoneyreceivedfromthegrantwillcoverthatportioninitsentirety.Thesecondhalf oftheorderwillbecompletedatalocalretailer,OfficeDepot,andwillbepaidforbytheSavannah ArtsAcademyDanceDepartment.We,myselfandmydepartmenthead,ChristineShawl,feelthatitis importanttogethighqualitymachinesandfeelthatbyusingourownresourcestopayforthe peripherals,wewillhavethebestproductavailabletosupplystudentswithmultipleworkstationsand thesoftwaretheywillneedtocompletetherequiredactivities.

Theresultsofthisprojectcouldeasilybesharedwithfacultyandotherdistrictpersonnelinmultiple formats.Theprojectwillbeproducedinadigitallearningenvironmentandcouldeventuallybe completedbyanyonewishingtohaveanartsbasedwebrepositoryacrossthestateofGeorgiaand beyond,perhapsnationally.AsummativevideocouldeasilybeproducedandpublishedtoYouTube makinganinstantpresspacketfortheproject,featuringactualstudentsworkingontheprojectthat couldbelinkedtoanynumberofwebsitesandorpublications.Inprintform,Iwouldbegladtowritea briefarticle,orbeinterviewedasneededinreferencetotheproject.Ifselected,Iwouldbemorethan happytopresentonthisprojecttoanyconferences/personsinterested.Thetotaldesignisintendedto pushartistsinawaythattheyhavenothadthechancetobepushedbefore,inthedirectionofself sufficiency. Ourdistrict,SavannahChathamCountyPublicSchoolsiscurrentlyundergoingatechnologyinitiative.I havereviewedseveralothercountytechnologyplansandhavefoundourtechnologyplantobeoneof themostcomprehensiveandprogressiveinthestate.Thisproject,onceconvertedtoanonlinelearning module,whilesatisfybenchmarksfortheyear2015asearlyasDecember2013. Whilethecurrentprojectisobviouslycredentialbased,otherfutureprojectsusingtheFineArtsData Centercouldutilizemoreartisticendeavorssuchaslightingdesignandprogrammingforourand studentsownchoreographicworksandsounddesignforourandstudentschoreographicworks.
