Minds On Students will work in small groups (depending on the pulley equipment available) to investigate how pulleys work - time to explore and figure out how they work - Safety is number one concern during this hands-on activity Action After theyve had 5-10 minutes to explore how the pulley is built, how it works, and why it works, guide their attention with questions: a) Can you identify the important parts (components) of a fixed simple pulley? b) From your investigations, why use a pulley? c) How is using a pulley different from just pulling an object straight up? (redirects the force) d) If you could make one rule about how a pulley works, what would that rule be? Discuss their answers. Consolidation - So, what we have discovered: 1) A Pulley is a simple machine. Simple machines make work easier by changing the direction or magnitude of a force. 2) Components of a simple pulley system: grooved wheel, pivot, belt or rope that runs inside the groove, load, force applied 3) When one end of the rope is pulled down, the load on the other end is pulled upwards - Visit the Wonder Wall to see if any questions had been answer. Invite students to add any questions they want to add - Allow students time to read from the bin of pulley books or complete unit title page Differentiation: - Provide different ways of asking the questions (visual prompts and questioning)

Assessment: - Able to investigate with particular care and attention to safety Reflection:
