In the United States, fonts are not protected under copyright. Fonts are considered to be utilitarian objects with utilty that outweighs any creative elements. However, fonts can be protected by other methods in the United States, such as design patents. Additionally, trademarks may be used to protect fonts, however this method of legal protection is not recommended as trademarks are the weakest form of legal protection.
