Self-Assessment of Formal Observation #2: January 23, 2014

Strengths:
-I modified my instruction & approach after each station rotation to improve the students
productivity
-I structured my instruction around the i do, we do, you do process
-I varied my instruction about fact family review

Goals:
-Remind students of behaving/ sitting like first graders/ refine my language with the students--
avert from saying guys
-Focus on planning activities that involve all student participation and maximize student learning
(read chorally etc)
-Be conscious of appropriate time to pass out materials, supplies etc (mindful of distractions
during the lesson)

REFLECTIONS: Week of January 20
Weekly Reflections :
General Insights into Teaching (3):
1. Calling students first graders, mathematicians, scientists etc helps students become
aware of what type of content we will be doing and will get them excited about their title
in the classroom

2.Choral responses help with student engagement and allows for the teacher to pinpoint
who is not on task or needs additional support in their learning

3. Allowing time for student discovery gives students the opportunity to uncover all of the
joys of learning (a structured but discovery based science lesson was effective in my
class!)
Goals for next week (3):
1. Continue learning all of the students names in the the other first grade classroom
(building more
relationship w/them)

2. Be more conscious of my language continue to try and avoid saying whats going
on guys
3. Remind myself that each student has baggage that I need to take into account as I
instruct and
each student may need a different approach/support while learning

(Optional) Humorous comments or situations:
One student while writing in his journal said woah what if on the beach, the sand was
actually sugar and the ocean was actually lemonade Oh first grade imagination!

(Optional) Gratitude practices and a brief description of its effect on the teaching/learning
process:
I wrote 2 notes to students and read them my letters they loved them and were very
excited! This gratitude practice changed my perspective and has allowed me to stop and
appreciate how hard my students are working :) It reminded me that teachers have such
an influential but also rewarding job Im so thrilled that you tried this practice and are
notices its impact. Keep it up. Keep your eyes open to additional impact of different
gratitude practices
