OPEN HOUSE WILL SHOWCASE SOLAR POWER
The renewable energy cooperative Peace Energy Coop will be hosting a barbecue and
open house Saturday May 17
th
to showcase two new solar powered buildings in Dawson
Creek.
South Peace Chiropractic and the Peace Energy office building have both recently been
solarized with large solar power systems mounted on their roofs. At the Open House,
tours will be given and the technology explained.
Wind power has been a mature technology for several decades now, explains Peace
Energys executive director Fred Feddema. Now solar power is catching up and
becoming a practical energy alternative around the world. We hope these two
demonstration systems will encourage home owners and businesses to go solar.
Both systems are grid-tied meaning that the power they produce is fed into the grid,
with the blessing of BC Hydro, and reduces or eliminates their electricity bills.
With a 25-year guarantee, these solid-state solar panels could run for a very long time,
continues Feddema. That makes them a good long-term investment and asset that adds
value to your home or office, while paying for itself over time.
Power fed into the grid is deducted from your power bill, and if at the end of the year you
have put more into the grid than you have taken out, BC Hydro sends you a cheque for
the difference. The Smart Meter, now installed across BC, automatically takes care of
tracking both the power taken out of the grid and now, with a solar power system, the
power put into the grid.
The solar array on the roof of South Peace Chiropractic has all the bells and whistles that
a solar power system can have: battery back-up, Smart Panels that maximize power,
and an internet-based monitoring system that displays the output of each panel from any
computer or smart phone in real time, 24/7.
In contrast, the Peace Energy office building solar array is the simplest possible system: a
solar array that just feeds electricity into the grid.
By showcasing both a very simple and a very advanced solar power system, we hope to
give visitors a clear idea of how the technology works and what options are available,
says Feddema.
