Zirconium Identification

by 555 22 May 2012, 05:19

We have to differentiate physically between carbon steel and zirconium. Don't have PMI
gun available and it's a little urgent.
How can we do that? Any difference in appearance? Magnetic behaviour?

for non destructive testing without PMI magnet can be used, Zr is considered non-magnetic
you can also compare the mass, if you know exact volume. iron density around 7.8, Zr is
around 6.5
or drop nitric acid on non critical part of the equipment and see the reaction , Zr will
not corrode

Thanks ace for your valuable reply.
I will check with magnet.

If you just want to differentiate zirconium from carbon steel, use magnet.
