Catholic Charities USA Awarded Grant to Help Military Members Transition Back
into Civilian Life

Alexandria, Virginia – A new grant to Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) will allow 15 veteran
or military-spouse AmeriCorps members to serve as peer navigators to veterans and active
military service members and their families, assisting them with accessing their benefits and
meeting other health, mental health, educational, and social service needs.

Awarded by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), this grant is part of
the more than $200 million being awarded to put AmeriCorps members on the ground to tackle
critical challenges in communities across the U.S.

“Catholic Charities USA and its member agencies appreciate this opportunity to continue and
expand the work we do to help America’s veterans and military families across the United
States,” said Father Larry Snyder, president of CCUSA. “This grant will enable us to assist
approximately 825 Veterans, and 125 military family members with accessing their benefits and
meeting other health, mental health, educational and social service needs.”

CCUSA has a long history in assisting military service members. Last summer, sixteen Catholic
Charities agencies were awarded Supportive Services for Veteran Families Program grants from
the Department of Veterans Affairs, which will enable them to serve nearly 3,600 veteran
households.

In a recent snapshot survey of CCUSA’s agency network, nearly two-thirds of Catholic Charities
agencies with a nearby military base reported that they are collaborating with the bases to
provide services to strengthen families and communities.
