Work Sample San Leandro High School Olympics
In the Spring of 2014, I organized a school event called the SLHS Olympics. The
Olympics was an event that required heavy amounts of planning. I had to plan two weeks worth
of competitive events on the San Leandro High campus, including the materials needed, who
would be participating, who would be helping out, and how the game would be ran. Teams of 10
or more signed up to battle it out in this competition and they competed against each other. This
event required tons of critical thinking, planning, management, organization, and
cooperating/communicating with others.
Through organizing the Olympics, I was able to gather many life and career skills. I was
able to manage my goals with the timeframes I was given. I met deadlines every single time.
With many different events, I was able to adapt to any changes in planning and was able to work
by myself and organize the events solo. Even though I worked alone, I knew when it was time to
ask for help, and was able to interact with others respectably.
This event really taught me how to be social and responsible. I was able to learn to work
with others in the Leadership class to achieve the intended results and was able to effectively
lead a group to completing a task. I was able to be accountable for the results of the Olympics
and was able to multitask balancing event planning and schoolwork.
I also gained many learning and innovation skills from the SLHS Olympics. I was able to
actually create this idea and implement it, and was able to make decisions and solve problems to
successfully pull it off. In creating this idea, I demonstrated originality and inventiveness. I was
able to answer questions and figure out how to perfect the event by reasoning effectively, and
was able to communicate my thoughts to others.
In the end, there were many improvements I couldve made. Although the event was a
huge success with crowds of people watching each event and over 200 posts under the
#SLHSOlympics hashtag on Instagram I couldve gotten more participation from the staff and
the student body. I was given a 2 week timeframe to plan this event, and it definitely was not
enough. I should give myself a larger timeframe to plan, and also make a committee to plan the
event.
I succeeded in pulling off the first-ever San Leandro High School Olympics, increasing
school spirit and increasing my own personal ability to organize and plan under pressure. These
skills that I have gained will help me to be a better event planner. I will be more organized, a
better multi-tasker, and 100% reliable in any project I attempt.
