THE BELGRADE COOPERATIVE BUILDING
The Belgrade Cooperative, operating from 1882 to 1945, was one of the strongest banks in the country. It had two
departmentsbanking and insurance. It financed Belgrades economy, and could boast clients such as the government of the
Kingdom of Serbia. From 1907 it operated in the purpose-built building at the corner of 48 Karadjordjeva, Hercegovaka
and Travnika streets. The building was designed by the prominent Belgrade architects Andra Stevanovi and Nikola
Nestorovi, and is considered their most significant joint work. Its sumptuous exterior shows neo-baroque features, with
allegorical sculpture on the front faade evoking the activities of the Cooperative. The building consists of a central block
that incorporates a vestibule, a counter hall and a conference room, and two wings with shops on the ground floor, and offices and two rental flats on the upper floors. Appraised as an anthological piece of Belgrade architecture, designated as a
heritage building in 1966, and a heritage building of outstanding significance in 1979, it now awaits restoration. (The faade
restoration project has been designed by the CHPIB architect Aleksandra evi.)
