SULFUR DIOXIDE (SO2)
Colorless, irritant gas generated primarily by
combustion of sulfur-containing fossil fuels
SO2 forms sulfurous acid severe irritant effect
on eyes, mucous membranes, skin
Inhalation bronchial constriction,
parasymphatetic refleces, altered smooth muscle
tone.
Phenomenon of adaptation to irritating
concentration has been reported on workers
Asthmatic individuals are especially sensitive to
SO2

Clinical effects
Irritation of eyes, nose, throat, reflex
bronchoconstiction
Severe exposure delayed onset pulmonary
edema
Cummulative effects cardiopulmonary disease
Management
Not specific. Depends on the theurapeutic
maneuver used in treatment of irritation of
respiratory tract and asthma
