Mental Health America of Colorado (MHAC) is Colorado’s leading nonprofit educator and

advocate working to eliminate the stigma of mental illness and increase access to mental health
treatment. Mental Health America of Colorado serves the people of Colorado by collaborating
with strategic partners to promote mental health, expand access to services and transform systems
of healthcare. MHAC envisions a healthy Colorado free of stigma and discrimination where every
person has full access to high quality services for all mental health and substance abuse conditions.
Established in 1953, MHAC is an independent nonprofit organization and an affiliate of Mental
Health America, the oldest and largest nonprofit addressing mental health issues in the nation.

MHAC has a unique internship role available in the Development & Communications Department
focusing on primarily on external communications/marketing. This position will work with a group
of development & marketing professionals in advancing the external relations initiative at an
organization that is deeply rooted and highly regarded in the mental health and non-profit

Position: Communications Intern

Position Supervised By:
Individual Donor Relations & Communications Coordinator

General Overview:
The intern will assist with MHAC communication functions of the organization. The intern will
help to promote the vision and mission of MHAC through external communications.

Various tasks and responsibilities will include:

Social Media
 Updating the MHAC Facebook page (events, activities, news, pictures, etc).
 Updating Twitter as necessary (especially involving Public Policy statements, event
announcements, etc).

External Communications
 Collecting stories and photos for and creating the monthly e-newsletter using Constant
 Writing press releases and website articles as assigned.
 Assist with MHAC’s website maintenance and development.
 Assist with the design and development of print collateral.
 Assist with the design and development of marketing strategies.
 Maintaining e-mail lists and creating Constant Contact e-mails as necessary.

 Maintaining an accurate contact list of Colorado media outlets.

Other Opportunities (Depending on the interests of the student):
 Taking pictures of MHAC programs and special events.
 Attending health fairs and community activities to hand out information about MHAC.

 This is an unpaid internship.
 Approximately 8-10 hours per week, depending on availability.
 If pursuing internship for credit must maintain compliance with internship obligations.
 Prior to the end of the internship term, the intern will be provided with written feedback.
