Stewardship of the Good News
I have already met everyone I want to meet. Ive
got enough friends. Its just too hard to get to know
people when you know theyll be leaving in a short
tme. I dont have the tme or the energy.
Have you ever thought those things? Figured your life
is full enough with the people you already know? Ev-
er hesitate wondering just how involved you want to
be in making a new friend? Sure, its easy to be
friendly, to welcome someone and be a gracious ac-
quaintance. But how deeply do we really welcome
others into our lives? It takes tme, energy, and a lot
of efort to get to know someone and sometmes
we wonder why we should bother.
Ive been part of this community long enough that
Ive experienced my frst few deep losses as people
move away, or worse yet pass away. It hurts. Actual-
ly, it aches. I think of these people ofen, wonder how
theyd respond or how much theyd enjoy something.
And things are diferent without them here.
That ache of loss shuts us down. We dont want to
get to know someone else because what happens if
they leave too? We dont want to keep opening our-
selves to that pain with every person we encounter. I
get it now. I get the hesitaton, I understand the pain,
and I dont like it either.
But dear ones, hospitality isnt about us. Hospitality
isnt about what we get out of the relatonships we
form or the energy it takes to form them. Hospitality
isnt about shared interests or personalites that
mesh.
True Christan hospitality is about welcoming and in-
cluding others the same way Christ welcomes and
includes us.

He talked with strangers, got to know them and their
journeys. He sat with them in their trials and comfort-
ed them in their pain. He showed them love and kind-
ness wherever he went and he didnt get much in
return. Sure, Jesus had his close friends, but that did-
nt close him of to others.
So I encourage you with words from Hebrews 13:1-
12, Let mutual love contnue. Do not neglect to
show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some
have entertained angels without knowing it. Some-
tmes being open and letng others in on your life will
hurt. It may take extra efort to get to know them and
enter into their lives. Being a gracious acquaintance
isnt enough. God calls
for us to welcome oth-
ers with compassion
and love.
So my challenge to you is
to let mutual love con-
tnue. Dont neglect to
show hospitality, or
Gods Peace to
strangers, including the
strangers with familiar
faces. Talk to someone you normally just smile at on
a Sunday morning, greet people you might recognize
at the grocery store, and take the tme and energy to
love for by doing these things, you may just fnd
your own life enriched by the almighty God who wel-
comes us into his family!

Blessed by knowing others,
~Pastor Matthew
