PHILIPPINES/
From Calamba to
Europe for the
second time
Reasons for Rizals return to the Philippines
To operate on his mothers eyes
To serve or help the people of his country who were oppressed by the
Spanish colonizers
To take responsibility for the effects of Noli Me Tangere.

July 3, 1887- Rizal left Rome by train and boarded the
Djemnah.
He opened a medical clinic and became known as Dr.
Uliman / Dr. Aleman (The doctor from Germany)
In order to sway the youth of Calamba from gambling
and wasting time doing nothing, he gave them lessons
in art, gymnastics, fencing and shooting.
The Dominican Order took over ALL the lands
of the town of Calamba and ordered the
increase of rentals paid by the tenants.

Mass eviction
Governor General Terrero ordered the investigation of
the Dominican-owned lands in order to remedy their
agrarian problems.
The tenants staged a public demonstration in Manila
and requested the Queen Regent to expel the friars
from the Philippines.

Rizals family had also been evicted.
Many of Rizals family members were exiled: Don
Francisco, Paciano, Saturnina, Narcisa and Lucia.
Lucias husband, Mariano Herbosa who died of cholera,
was denied a Catholic burial for the simple reason that
he was the brother-in-law of Jose Rizal.
Rizal wrote A Profanation, an essay about the
injustice done by the Church to innocent indios.
All these events led Rizal to his decision to go back to
Europe.

February 15, 1889 The organization established a
newspaper, La Solidaridad, the mouthpiece of the
organization in Europe and in the Philippines.

Representation in the Spanish Cortez
Involvement in governance
Equality of the Filipinos and Spanish in the eyes of the law
More civil liberties for the Filipinos
Freedom of expression
Assimilation

RIZALS DEPARTURE FOR PARIS
March 19, 1889 Rizal bade the Beckett
family goodbye.
In some history books, it was mentioned that
he left because of Gertrude. In his letter to
Anton Regidor he noted:
I cannot marry her because I have other ties.. I
am not going to commit the indignity of placing
passion over the pure and virginal love she might
offer me.
RIZALS LIFE IN
PARIS
Rizal initially stayed with
Valentin Ventura and then
later on transferred to a
boarding house.
He spent his free time at
the gym or fencing.
He always spent 2 or 3
hours at Bibliotheque
Nationale for research.
He always visited his
friends and they spent
time having coffee or tea.
RIZAL IN MADRID
Rizal asked for the help of the
Filipinos in Spain to support the
case of the people of Calamba.
He sought the help of the
Minister of Colonies, Minister
Fabie, but the Filipinos were not
heard.
In the Philippines, Rizals family
members were exiled: Don
Francisco, Saturnina, brothers-
in-law Silvestre Ubaldo and
Antonio Lopez and relatives,
Mateo Elejorde and Dandoy.
Mangarap kayo, at ipagpatuloy ang
pakikibaka para sa ganap na kabutihan ng
ating lahi mula sa kamay ng bagong pang-
aalipin, at huwag kayong padala sa takot at
pag-aalinlangan, bagaman maaari kayong
salubungin ng dambuhalang mga alon sa
inyong paglalakbay.Hindi lahat ng
pangarap ay natutupad, pero ang kahanga-
hangang mga bagay sa mundo ay nilikha
ng mga mapangarapin...
