GOALS
|| For students to learn that you can never truly understand what it
feels like to walk in someone elses shoes.
|| Information and hard statistical data can cause people to become
detached from issues which is why anecdotal evidence is important.
|| Students will understand the reality of these issues and be inspired
to take action and educate themselves.

MAIN POINTS

Racism/ Discrimination is in the dorms, in
the library, in the classroom, in the dining
halls, on the bus and in school events.

Twerking, jokes, stereotypes, micro-
aggressions
Mis-portrayal, inaccuracy, lack
cultural representation
Themed meals i.e. decorations, food
types, presentation of employees
(costumes, vernacular, slang)
Discrimination, slurs, lack of respect
Inaccurate portrayals of people of
color (rap and hip-hop), cultural
appropriation, guest speakers,
themed dances, advertisements, and
security

EDUCATE YOURSELF

Vocab

Racism: The belief that all members of
each race possess characteristics, abilities,
or qualities specific to that race, especially
so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior
to another race or races.

Privilege: A right, advantage, or immunity
granted to or enjoyed by an individual,
corporation of individuals, etc., beyond the
usual rights or advantages of others.

Microaggression: Microaggressions are
the subtle ways in which body and verbal
language convey oppressive ideology about power or
privilege against marginalized identities.

Tokenize: Making the lone person of color into the poster
child of their race/ethnicity which can place unrealistic,
conflicting or racist expectations on that person.

Intersectionality: Analyzing how race, class, gender and other
social identities come together to shape an individuals
experience.

Marginalized Identities: Identities that are not male,
heterosexual, upper middle class or, in other words,
privileged. Women, People of Color, and LGBT identified are
examples of marginalized identities.

Cultural Appropriation: Taking intellectual property,
traditional knowledge, cultural expressions, or artifacts from
someone else's culture without permission. This can include
unauthorized use of another culture's dance, dress, music,
language, folklore, cuisine, traditional medicine, religious
symbols, etc.
