Fact Sheet

Canadas Afghanistan Wounded Veterans are suffering needlessly
as a result of the inadequacies of the New Veterans Charter.

Fact
The disability award given to seriously wounded soldiers suffering from the loss of limbs
is woefully inadequate at up to $285,000.00.

Fact
With the exception of the disability award, all financial benefits under the NVC
are subject to taxation, end at age 65, and remain inadequate.

Fact
The public has been lead to believe that all the wounded Veterans have received the maximum
disability award. Only a few dozen have received the maximum amount.

Fact
A 2011 study by Queens University concluded that the NVC provides up to
60% less financial compensation by the NVC than that provided under the
former Military Pension Act over the lifetime of a disabled Veteran.

Fact
The NVC discriminates against Reservists (who made up about 30% of Canadas Afghanistan soldiers).
A seriously wounded or disabled Reservist will only receive some 50-60% compensation
that a regular force soldier might receive under the same circumstances.

Fact
Since its inception in 2006, of about 250 recommendations made to improve the NVC,
only about 90 have been partially implemented.

Fact
Veterans Affairs have layed off 233 employees and closed 9 regional VAC offices, and the ill-trained
personnel at Service Canada offices are expected to support those Veterans who suffer from emotional,
physiological and/or psychological trauma resulting from Peacekeeping or War experiences,
while not nearly enough support is provided to the family caregivers of these Veterans.

Fact
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a serious problem experienced by Canadas Peacekeeping and War
Veterans. Between 1972 and 2007, after their release, almost 27% of male Veterans (696 of 2,620)
committed suicide, while (29 of 204) women committed suicide. Since November 2013, 9 serving soldiers
or Veterans suffering from PTSD, have committed suicide. Among Veterans, the percentage of deaths by
suicide is 45% higher than the general population. Not enough is being done to help these Veterans.

Fact
Veterans Affairs Canada has assessed 1,428 totally and permanently incapacitated Afghanistan War Veterans,
400 of which will receive no allowances and have no Canadian Armed Forces pension.

An Evening of T ibute and Support

Canadian soldiers have served and suffered whenever called upon to preserve our
principles of freedom and democracy, and only when Canadas membership
in NATO or the United Nations approved such action.

Many hundreds of these young Canadians who served in Cyprus, the Gaza Strip, Bosnia, Croatia,
Rwanda, Afghanistan and many other areas of terrible conict have returned home suffering
from severe physical and psychological wounds, some of which will not immediately be
realized by our medical community or Veterans Affairs Canada. Please help these young
wounded Veterans by purchasing tickets to attend our funraiser.
