Indonesian Ministry Of Forestry To Rescue Javan Leopard From

Deforestation Threats

Javan Leopard which originated in Indonesia has been classified as critically endangered
since 2008 as there are approximately 500 of it left in several island such as Java,
Nusakambangan, Sempu, and Kangean with habitats ranging from mangrove forest, beach
forest, lowland tropical rainforest, also crops. According to several research, deforestation is
being suspected to be the source of problem in this case. Deforestation has led to
fragmentation and degradation of animal habitat, especially Javan Leopard. In the other side,
many kinds of conflicts with humans are likely to increase in the last 10 years and make it even
harder to preserve it.
Therefore, Indonesian Ministry of Forestry in collaboration with the Indonesian Safari
Park, academics, conservation practitioners, observers and NGOs organized Leopard Java
Conference on 29

until 30 January in Indonesian Safari Park, Bogor to rescue these endangered
animals. Minister of Forestry Zulkifli Hasan belief that the momentum of this conference will be
utilized optimally to share experiences and ideas to formulate concrete steps can be done
effectively.
The Declaration of Bandar Lampung also being signed simultaneously in this event in
terms of rhino conservation efforts. This declaration is generated from the previous Asian Rhino
Range State Meeting with International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and being
supported by several countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Bhutan and Nepal.
