1. GENERAL
1.1 Scope
1.1.1 This Data Standard lists the thicknesses and theoretical system performance estimates for thermal
insulation applied to piping and equipment operating at temperatures of below 70ºF through 1200ºF.
1.1.2 The following parameters are the basis for this data:
Calcium Silicate insulation.
Bright metal jacket having emissivity (EMISS) of 0.09.
80ºF ambient temperature (Tamb).
80% relative humidity.
5 miles/hour wind speed.
1.1.3 The insulation thicknesses in Table I will theoretically result in a surface temperature (Tsurf) not more than
170ºF and a heat loss to the contained fluid not exceeding 170 Btu/hr·ft².
2. INSULATION SYSTEM DATA
2.1 Insulation Thicknesses
The required nominal insulation thicknesses for the given NPS and operating temperature range shall be
determined from Table I.
2.2 Heat Loss
2.2.1 The amount of heat lost to the atmosphere per square foot of outside insulation system surface area is
shown in Table II for the nominal insulation thicknesses listed in Table I.
2.2.2 The amount of heat lost to the atmosphere per linear foot of pipe is shown in Table III for the nominal
insulation thicknesses listed in Table I.
2.2.3 Each heat loss shown in Tables II and III is evaluated at the maximum operating temperature in the
corresponding increment shown in Table I.
