Press Statement: On Steep Hike in Railway Passenger Fare and Freight
In one of the sharpest attack on the common people of the country, Modi led BJP’s
Central Govt. has effected a very steep hike in the railway fares, passenger fares by 14.2%
across all classes and freight charges by 6.5%. This hike will increase economic burden on
the people particularly on the poor people. It will give rise to escalation in prices of
essential commodities across the board. This hike stand in sharp contrast to the BJP’s plank
of curbing price rise in the recently concluded parliamentary elections. With elections
over Modi Govt. has embarked on serving the interests of the corporate by crushing the
common people in the name of cutting govt. expenditure and bringing down fiscal deficit.
This attack by the Govt. is in line with Modi Govt.’s resolve to speed up economic
policy framework of Manmohan Singh Govt. In fact this hike too was announced on the day
of election results but was put on hold then. Now BJP Govt. has announced the hike. BJP
Govt. is talking of losses run by the railway while lakhs of crore rupees are being gifted to
big capitalists every year in the name of tax waivers.
This announcement of Modi Govt. is just the beginning of “good days” promised by
Modi and BJP. And this is just the beginning. With its parliamentary majority, corporate
supported Modi Govt. is going to unleash all round attack on the people. This step shows
what awaits the people, particularly common people.
CPI(ML)-New Democracy condemns this increase in fare and freight charges and
demands that they be immediately rolled back. CPI(ML)-New Democracy calls upon the
people to protest this steep hike and force the Govt. to withdraw the same.
