Today we had a mat weaving activity using paper in
a large group. I had previously cut the paper for
children. Using this paper I demonstrated how to
make a woven mat. When I had finished the mat, I
made it in to a bag. The children were so excited
when they saw it. They all watched very carefully.
While I demonstrated how to make the bag I
explained to the children a little about Maori culture.
Weaving is one of Mori peoples main art forms.
Mori people also use Harakeke(Flax) to make
flowers, mats and baskets.
While I was observing and helping some children to
weave correctly, I noticed Aya was persevering and
trying to make it right. I saw her use a variety of
learning strategies such as watching and copying
other friends. In the group S finished her weaving
mat earlier so I asked her if she could help other
children. I asked Sameena to help her friend Aya, so
she went to Aya and offered help. After Sameena
helped her a little, Aya said thanks and then she

finished the rest of it by herself. Once Aya finished she was so happy.
She came and asked me to staple her finished woven paper and
make it like a bag. After she received the bag back she went to her
friends and showed them. Then the children all talked together
about what to put in their bag.

What learning do I think happened here?
Aya showed real perseverance while making her bag. She also
demonstrated many other learning dispositions, such as being able
to try new things, using trial and error, making mistakes and asking
for help. These are all important qualities that will assist her
learning throughout her life time.
What next?
Next week, Inxa Allah, we will make flowers with Harakeke so Aya
can continue to deepen her knowledge of weaving.
