The Club
Course designed by Ben Sayers & others in 1897 A parkland course with excellent turf ideal for 36 hole play
suitable all ages a good test of golf.
Full catering and bar service with seperate games and tv room.
Well suited for visiting parties , quite flat , apart from the 18th when you can usually tell if someone is having a
good round or not by the way they trudge up the hill, quite short , but well protected by trees and small tricky
greens which are allways in superb condition.
Par 67 comprises of 5 par threes and 13 par fours . The signature hole is the 11th which is a drive then a blind
second shot 30ft down to a green that is walled on two sides by steep embankments and out of bounds left and
through the green. Add to this two bunkers and a burn and it lets you know how tricky this hole is . The 11th
hole is just part of what they call amen corner in canmore , it starts at the ninth with the burn running across
the fairway and the loch at the back of the green , then the 10th hole with out of bounds running all the way
along the hole on the left side as is the 11th . after the 11th you meet the 12th hole , a par three at just under
200 yards , where you have to hit a tee shot over a big gorge that is full of trees then to the 13th which is a par
3 of around the same length with out of bounds to the left of the green. If you have completed these holes not
having dropped many shots then you should be on a decent score.
The 19th hole is allways very welcoming and the food is excellent.
The dress code is smart but casual , no football colours on the course or clubhouse.

The Course
The course at canmore golf club has been at its present site since1902. Until 1913 the course consisted of nine
holes with the present third being the original first. In 1914 the course layout changed to eighteen with the help
of mr Ben Sayers of Berwick.
Soon after the opening of the new course, most of it was given up to help with the war effort mainly for the
purpose of drying netted flax. The course was given back to the club in 1921 and by the following year,
redesigned, was fully operational. This lasted until 1941 when again, most of the course was given up for the
war effort - this time in the form of cultivated land.
The course was again given back to the club in 1946, again redesigned, and with the exception of a few minor
changes this is the current layout.
In recent years many trees have been added to the course, creating a more defined layout.
Canmore is an interesting challenge for golfers at all levels of ability and being of moderate length ideal for two
rounds in one day. It provides a good test with rewards for accuracy and a good short game.

Par 4 Par 3 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 14

Championship - 257 Medal - 257 Regular - 250 C'ship Ladies - 237 Ladies & Juniors - 237

YOU DONT WANT TO BE WEARING A SKIRT FOR THIS ONE , IT,S A

PAR THREE FOR THE LADIES AND A PAR 4 FOR THE MEN . TREES
DOWN THE LEFT AND A GREEN THAT SLOPES VERY QUICKLY
DOWNWARDS FROM THE TEE . THREE BUNKERS NEAR THE GREEN.

2 - QUEEN ANNE

Par 4 Par 5 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 1

Championship - 398 Medal - 398 Regular - 388 C'ship Ladies - 369 Ladies & Juniors - 369

A LONG STRAIGHT TREE LINED HOLE WITH A BUNKER TO THE

RIGHT OF A RAISED GREEN THAT HAS SUBTLE BORROWS . OUT OF
BOUNDS TO THE REAR OF THE GREEN. DON,T GO IN THE TREES AS
THIS WILL COST YOU AT LEAST A SHOT . A GOOD DRIVE UP THE
MIDDLE IS THE ANSWER HERE BUT IT IS VERY EARLY IN THE
ROUND AND A FOUR OR EVEN A FIVE IS A GOOD SCORE.

3 - THE AVENUE

Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 6

Championship - 352 Medal - 352 Regular - 340 C'ship Ladies - 314 Ladies & Juniors - 314

ANOTHER TREE LINED PAR FOUR WITH A FAIRWAY THAT SLOPES

DOWN TO THE RIGHT. THE SECOND SHOT IN HAS TO CARRY A
LARGE BUNKER BEFORE THE GREEN AND LAND ON A TWO TIER
GREEN THAT IS PROTECTED BY THREE OTHER BUNKERS .
4 - THE ROAD

Par 3 Par 3 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 16

Championship - 155 Medal - 155 Regular - 148 C'ship Ladies - 144 Ladies & Juniors - 144

A PAR THREE WITH TWO GREENSIDE BUNKERS AND TREES ON

BOTH SIDES OF THE GREEN . THE GREEN IS RAISED AND ALSO
SLOPES BACK TOWARDS THE TEE . GO BIG AT YOUR PERIL , GO BIG
AND LEFT THEN REACH FOR THE WORRY BEADS. SCORE A THREE OR
BETTER HERE AND YOU HAVE DONE WELL.

5 - VENTUREFAIR

Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 10

Championship - 337 Medal - 337 Regular - 327 C'ship Ladies - 310 Ladies & Juniors - 310

A SHORT PAR FOUR WITH TREES ON THE LEFT AND A LARGE TREE
TO THE RIGHT WITH A SHALLOW BUNKER ON THE RIGHT AS WELL .
THIS BUNKER SHOULD ONLY COME INTO PLAY IF YOU DON,T CATCH
YOUR TEE SHOT QUITE RIGHT. THERE IS A SMALL DEEP BUNKER TO
THE LEFT OF THE GREEN AND LARGE FIR TREES TO THE REAR . THIS
GREEN HAS QUITE A BIG SLOPE FROM RIGHT TO LEFT ON IT AND
THE AFORE MENTIONED BUNKER IS WAITING FOR YOUR BALL.
FROM THE MEDAL TEE YOU WOULD BE BETTER HITTING YOUR
DRIVE STRAIGHT OR WITH A VERY SLIGHT DRAW AND THE
FAIRWAY WHICH SLOPES FROM RIGHT TO LEFT SHOULD PUT YOU
IN A GOOD POSITION ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE. LEAK YOUR TEE
SHOT UP TO THE RIGHT AND YOUR SECOND SHOT IS A NIGHTMARE
!

6 - WELLWOOD

Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 8

Championship - 351 Medal - 351 Regular - 341 C'ship Ladies - 326 Ladies & Juniors - 326

A PAR FOUR WITH A FAIRWAY THAT SLOPES FROM RIGHT TO LEFT

FOR MOST OF THE HOLE AND THE LAST PART BEING MORE LIKE A
SADDLE WHICH IF YOU DON,T HIT IN THE MIDDLE OR CARRY ALL
THE WAY TO THE GREEN WHICH HAS TWO SMALL BUNKERS AT THE
FRONT WILL SEND YOUR BALL OFF TO ONE SIDE LEAVING YOU A
TRICKY SHOT FROM THE ROUGH . THERE IS OUT OF BOUNDS UP TO
THE LEFT WITH TWO SMALL PLANTATIONS WHICH ARE VERY THICK
. THERE ARE ALSO TWO LARGE TREES ON THE LEFT OF THE
FAIRWAY WITH A LINE OF TREES ON THE RIGHT. HITTING A TEE
SHOT UP THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE FAIRWAY NEAR THE TWO
TREES IS A GOOD SHOT AS YOU ARE AT THE TOP OF THE FAIRWAY
AND YOU CAN SEE THE GREEN FROM HERE. JUST DONT HIT THE
TREES OR ELSE .
7 - THE LADE

Par 3 Par 3 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 18

Championship - 143 Medal - 143 Regular - 139 C'ship Ladies - 137 Ladies & Juniors - 137

A SHORT DOWNHILL PAR THREE , HIT YOUR TEE SHOT SHORT AND
THERE IS A BIG BUNKER WAITING , GO LEFT AND THERE IS
ANOTHER , GO RIGHT AND THERE ARE TWO BUNKERS , FINALLY GO
BIG AND YOU ARE LOOKING AT A FLOP SHOT BACK ON TO THE
GREEN THAT IS RAISED IN FRONT OF YOU . AND THATS IF YOU ARE
LUCKY ENOUGH NOT TO HAVE WENT DOWN THE STEEP
EMBANKMENT AT THE REAR WHERE THERE IS MANY A BALL. APART
FROM THAT , QUITE A NICE LITTLE PAR THREE . AND IF YOU
HAPPEN TO MAKE A HOLE IN ONE HERE IN MEDAL PLAY YOU WILL
BE REWARDED WITH A SUNDAY POST PUTTER.

8 - JANEFIELD

Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 12

Championship - 334 Medal - 334 Regular - 326 C'ship Ladies - 286 Ladies & Juniors - 286

THIS CAN BE A NASTY PAR FOUR . YOU TEE OFF FROM AN ELEVATED
POSITION LOOKING AT THICK TREES ON THE LEFT AND OUT OF
BOUNDS ON THE SHORT RIGHT. HOWEVER YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO
DRIVE OVER THIS BUT DONT QUITE CATCH IT AND ITS RELOAD.
THE FAIRWAY STRETCHING IN FRONT OF YOU GOES UPHILL
TOWARDS THE GREEN WHERE IT STARTS TO LEVEL OFF. THE BIG
HITTERS AMONGST YOU CAN CARRY THE BALL ALL THE WAY UP THE
TOP OF THE HILL LEAVING JUST A SHORT CHIP UP TO THE GREEN
WHICH IS PROTECTED BY TWO BUNKERS , ONE TO THE LEFT AND
ONE TO THE FRONT RIGHT, WITH OUT OF BOUNDS AT THE REAR OF
THE GREEN. HOWEVER, IF YOUR TEE SHOT IS A BIT SHORT THEN
THE HILL IS WAITING TO TURN YOUR SHORT SECOND SHOT INTO
SOMETHING MUCH NASTIER. A MID IRON WITH THE OUT OF
BOUNDS AT THE REAR

9 - THE LOCH

Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 4

Championship - 375 Medal - 375 Regular - 371 C'ship Ladies - 331 Ladies & Juniors - 331

THIS IS A TESTING FINISH TO THE FRONT NINE AND THE START OF

A GROUP OF FIVE SCORE MAKING OR SCORE BREAKING HOLES. THE
FAIRWAY IS SPLIT BY A SHALLOW CONCRETE WATERWAY THAT
CUTS DIAGONALLY ACROSS THE HOLE. JUST IN THE LANDING AREA
OF MOST TEE SHOTS . THERE ARE TREES TO THE LEFT OF THE
FAIRWAY BEFORE THE WATER HAZARD THEN AFTER THAT YOU
HAVE OUT OF BOUNDS ON THE LEFT THEN EVENTUALLY YOU HAVE
THE LOCH ON THE LEFT AND TO THE REAR OF THE GREEN . THERE IS
ALSO A DEEP GREENSIDE BUNKER TO THE FRONT RIGHT . WITH A
GOOD TAIL WIND YOU CAN HAVE A GO AT GETTING OVER THE
HAZARD BUT BE WARNED YOU COULD QUITE EASILY HIT THE
CONCRETE AND NEVER SEE THE BALL AGAIN !
10 - THE BURN

Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 5

Championship - 375 Medal - 375 Regular - 358 C'ship Ladies - 340 Ladies & Juniors - 340

A PAR FOUR WITH ALL THE ROOM IN THE WORLD ON THE RIGHT
AND NO ROOM WHAT SO EVER ON THE LEFT. IT IS A STRAIGHT
HOLE WITH OUT OF BOUNDS ON THE LEFT AND A STEEP SLOPE
RUNNING FROM RIGHT TO LEFT ALL ALONG THE HOLE. IF YOU GO
TOO FAR RIGHT THEN YOUR SECOND SHOT IS AIMING OUT OF
BOUNDS. IF YOU OVER CLUB IT,S RELOAD AND IF YOU UNDER CLUB
THEN YOU FACE THE DANGER OF HITTING THE HILL AND GOING
THROUGH THE GREEN ANYWAY. HIT A NICE STRAIGHT DRIVE AND
YOU HAVE QUITE AN EASY SHOT INTO THE GREEN , AND IF YOU DO
HAPPEN TO OVER CLUB A LITTLE THEN THE SLOPE THROUGH THE
BACK OF THE GREEN WILL BRING YOUR BALL BACK ON TO THE
DANCE FLOOR.

11 - QUARRY

Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 2

Championship - 374 Medal - 374 Regular - 335 C'ship Ladies - 333 Ladies & Juniors - 333

THE SIGNATURE HOLE AT CANMORE. A LINE OF TREES ON THE LEFT

AND ALSO A BUNKER NEAR THE LANDING AREA OF MOST TEE
SHOTS. ON THE RIGHT YOU HAVE QUITE A BIT OF ROOM AND THE
FAIRWAY SLOPES FROM RIGHT TO LEFT SO A DRIVE UP THE RIGHT
HAND SIDE IS THE ORDER OF THE DAY HERE. THE SECOND SHOT
HERE IS A BLIND SHOT INTO A GREEN THAT IS ABOUT 30FT BELOW
AND IS PROTECTED BY A BUNKER ON THE RIGHT , A BUNKER ON
THE LEFT , A BURN THAT RUNS ALONG THE LEFT HAND SIDE , OUT
OF BOUNDS IS FURTHER LEFT AND OUT OF BOUNDS TO THE REAR
AS WELL. THE MOST SPECTACULAR HOLE AT CANMORE AND ALSO
ONE OF THE TRICKIEST. MANY A NIGHTMARE HAS BEEN HAD HERE.

12 - SPION KOP

Par 3 Par 3 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 9

Championship - 195 Medal - 195 Regular - 190 C'ship Ladies - 120 Ladies & Juniors - 120

THIS IS AN INTIMIDATING PAR THREE FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE. IT IS

195 OFF THE MEDAL TEE OVER A DEEP GORGE THAT IS FULL OF
TREES AND FAILED TEE SHOTS. IF YOU FAIL TO CLEAR THIS THEN
YOU SIMPLY HIT AGAIN AS THERE IS VIRTUALLY NO HOPE OF
GETTING OUT OF THE TREES THAT ARE DOWN THERE. THE GREEN
HAS TWO BUNKERS ON THE RIGHT AND ONE TO THE LEFT AND
ALSO MORE TREES TO THE LEFT AS WELL. A TEE SHOT THAT IS BIG
IS OK AT THIS HOLE AS THERE IS NO DANGER AT THE BACK.
13 - THE FARM

Par 3 Par 3 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 13

Championship - 188 Medal - 188 Regular - 185 C'ship Ladies - 183 Ladies & Juniors - 183

ANOTHER HARD PAR THREE HERE WITH OUT OF BOUNDS LEFT OF

THE GREEN AND TROUBLE THROUGH THE GREEN . THE GREEN IS
ALSO PROTECTED BY A BUNKER ON THE RIGHT FRONT BUT THE
MOST PROTECTION TO THE HOLE IS THE GREEN. THE GREEN
SLOPES FROM LEFT TO RIGHT AND IF THE PIN IS ON THE BOTTOM
SIDE THEN THIS HOLE CAN QUICKLY BECOME A CARD WRECKER .
LIKE MOST COURSES , THEY SAY THAT IF YOU ARE BELOW THE PIN
AT CANMORE THEN YOU WILL SCORE WELL . PLAYING WITH A FADE
WILL DEFINATELY KEEP YOU AWAY FROM THE OUT OF BOUNDS
HERE BUT IT WONT KEEP YOU ON THE GREEN. THE BEST SHOT IS A
HIGH DRAW , WHICH IS WHY IT SUITS THE BETTER PLAYERS WHO
CAN GET A BIT DISTANCE WITH THERE IRONS. A FOUR HERE IS BY
NO MEANS A DISGRACE, IN FACT ASK MOST PEOPLE ON THE TEE
BEFORE HAND IF THEY WOULD TAKE A FOUR AND IT WOULD BE A
RESOUNDING YES!

14 - HEADWELL

Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 11

Championship - 347 Medal - 347 Regular - 343 C'ship Ladies - 338 Ladies & Juniors - 338

A FAIRLY STRAIGHT FORWARD HOLE WITH A GOOD CHANCE OF A

BIRDIE . TREES ON THE LEFT THAT WILL COST YOU AT LEAST ONE
SHOT BUT THERE IS A RATHER GENEROUS FAIRWAY AND A FEW
TREES ON THE RIGHT. THERE ARE BUNKERS JUST SHORT OF THE
GREEN ON BOTH SIDES AND OUT OF BOUNDS THROUGH THE BACK.
THE OTHER TRICKY THING ABOUT THIS HOLE IS THAT IT IS ALL
DOWN HILL SO YOUR SECOND SHOT IS FROM A DOWNHILL LIE.
NEVER THE LESS QUITE AN EASY HOLE.

15 - BLEACHFIELD

Par 3 Par 3 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 15

Championship - 184 Medal - 184 Regular - 178 C'ship Ladies - 173 Ladies & Juniors - 173

LAST OF THE PAR THREES AND ONE THAT HAS A FEW DANGERS.
THIS GREEN SLOPES FROM RIGHT TO LEFT AND HAS A LARGE
FRONT BUNKER THAT IS ABOUT TEN YARDS SHORT OF THE GREEN
WITH TWO FURTHER GREENSIDE BUNKERS RIGHT AND LEFT. THERE
ARE TREES TO THE LEFT AND A FEW TREES ON THE RIGHT . THERE
IS ALSO A WATER HAZARD ON THE BACK LEFT WITH OUT OF
BOUNDS BEHIND IT, BUT THIS SHOULDN,T COME INTO PLAY.
16 - BROOMFIELD

Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 17

Championship - 258 Medal - 258 Regular - 251 C'ship Ladies - 243 Ladies & Juniors - 243

THIS SHORT PAR FOUR CAN REALLY HELP YOUR SCORE, IF YOU HIT
A GOOD TEE SHOT. GO LEFT AND YOU COULD QUITE EASILY LOSE
YOUR BALL, GO RIGHT AND YOU COULD BE BLOCKED OUT BY ONE
OF TWO POCKETS OF TREES. THERE ARE THREE BUNKERS ON THIS
HOLE , ONE SHORT AND RIGHT AND TWO FRONT GREENSIDE. THE
GREEN IS QUITE FLAT WITH SOME SUBTLE BORROWS AND A STEEP
SLOPE LEFT OF THE GREEN. A GOOD STRAIGHT TEE SHOT HERE AND
A BIRDIE HERE IS VERY POSSIBLE AND MAYBE EVEN AN EAGLE .
THERE HAVE EVEN BEEN SOME HOLES IN ONE HERE.

17 - SANDWICH

Par 4 Par 5 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 3

Championship - 430 Medal - 430 Regular - 421 C'ship Ladies - 412 Ladies & Juniors - 412

THE LONGEST HOLE AT CANMORE WITH A FAIRWAY THAT SLOPES

QUITE STEEPLY FROM LEFT TO RIGHT WHICH CAN TURN A DRIVE
INTO THE ROUGH ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OR WORSE THAN THAT
, BEHIND ONE OF THE FEW TREES THAT WAIT FOR AN ERRANT TEE
SHOT. THERE IS ALSO A BUNKER ON THE RIGHT THAT CATCHES A
FEW BALLS. ON THE LEFT IT IS MOSTLY DOMINATED BY TREES,
ALTHOUGH YOU CAN FIND THE FAIRWAY OF THE SECOND HOLE
FURTHER LEFT , BUT IT IS ONE TRICKY SHOT FROM THERE INTO
THE GREEN. THE GREEN HAS TWO BUNKERS , ONE ON EACH SIDE AT
THE FRONT, AND IT SLOPES FROM LEFT TO RIGHT. A BOGEY OR
BETTER HERE IS A DECENT RESULT.

18 - UP THE HILL

Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 7

Championship - 323 Medal - 323 Regular - 243 C'ship Ladies - 240 Ladies & Juniors - 240

THE LAST. A PAR FOUR FROM THE BACK TEE IS A LOT HARDER
THAN FROM THE FRONT TEE. GO LEFT HERE AND ALL THE GOOD
WORK DONE BEFORE HAND MEANS JACK. YOU JUST DON,T GO
THERE IF YOU ARE ON A SCORE . YOU HAVE QUITE A BIT OF ROOM
ON THE RIGHT WITH THE FAIRWAY FROM THE FOURTEENTH AS
WELL. THERE IS A BUNKER ON EACH SIDE OF THE FAIRWAY AT
ABOUT THE LANDING AREA OF MOST GOLFERS THOUGH THE BETTER
STRIKERS OF THE BALL WILL CARRY THESE. THE TEE SHOT IS UP A
STEEP HILL THEN IT FLATTENS OUT SLIGHTLY , WITH A FEW
TROUBLESOME TREES ON THE RIGHT AND A LOT MORE ON THE
LEFT. AT THE GREEN THERE ARE ANOTHER COUPLE OF BUNKERS
FRONT RIGHT AND LEFT. THE GREEN HAS A VERY SEVERE SLOPE ON
IT WHICH SLOPES BACK TOWARDS THE TEE AND HAS BEEN THREE
PUTTED OR WORSE QUITE A FEW TIMES , AND ALL IN FRONT OF
THE VERY LARGE WINDOWS IN THE CLUBHOUSE!
