Lawsuit filed by county jail inmate dismissed

H-T Report

A lawsuit filed by a Monroe County Jail inmate against the county commissioners, sheriff’s department and the jail’s maintenance
contractor has been dismissed.

Inmate Steven T. Rottet filed the handwritten lawsuit in Monroe Circuit Court in January, alleging the toilet in his cell was backed up for about three
weeks, causing eye and throat irritation and a fall that required stitches in his head. Rottet said jail staffers had repeatedly logged the problem for the
maintenance staff but it wasn’t fixed, court documents show.

Rottet asked the suit be dropped in a letter to the judge, saying he believed he needed an attorney and wanted to wait and pursue the issue after
he’s released from jail, court documents show. The case was dismissed Friday by Monroe Circuit Judge E. Michael Hoff.

Rottet is being held on a $100,000 surety bond in the Monroe County Jail on a charge of felony child molesting. That case is set for a pretrial
conference at 2 p.m. April 3.
