As a child development professional, my personal mission is to provide a safe
and developmentally appropriate learning environment to all students, which
promotes each childs social/emotional, physical and cognitive development.
How a teacher instructs his/her students has a direct influence on their
students development. It is a teachers responsibility to provide the highest level
of education for all students by constructing creative curriculums, lesson plans
and activities to challenge and foster a childs educational success. I am
committed to the families I serve by providing support and encouragement in
and outside of the classroom to promote growth within each familys

As stated by DeBord (2002), We suggest that the quality of
child care is as excellent as the expertise and knowledge of
the caregivers working with the children (pg. 295).
During adolescence children experience a wide variety of emotions and
situations, to which pave the road for their future whether negative or positive.
The adolescent period of human growth and development is a time of many
transitions for the teen. Along with the physical changes that take place during
puberty come changes in teens cognitive capabilities, as well as growth and
change in the social and emotional areas. (Turner & Welch, 2012, pg. 73). It is
very important for parents to understand that at this developmental stage, their
children are young adults that are eager to gain their individuality and

Parents influence their childrens decisions greatly. Parents need to set a
positive model for their children to look up to. Talk to children about sex,
changes, curfew, and etc. to keep open communication within the home. Family
structure, dynamics and culture all play a role in maintaining a positive family
environment. In a childs environment family beliefs, values and culture play a
major role on the influence of a child. How the adolescent understand and
views the world around them are connected with the opportunities and
influences that parents provide within the family environment.

Partnerships for a Purpose
The purpose of this presentation is to show how each significant involvement plays a
role in a childs development. Adolescence is a stage where children need to be
guided with healthy and positive interactions to encourage their own personal growth.
As stated by Berk (2013), Identity development also depends on schools and
communities that offer rich and varied opportunities for exploration (pg. 474).When
parents, teachers and communities partner together, we can help support a childs
individuality, interests and independence into adulthood.

Positive collaborations can be a vital tool in supporting young adults. Parent,
community and teacher education is vital to ensure that children are getting
experiences within their environment. Children need various opportunities to learn
within their environment. According to Berk (2013), In adolescence, too, religious
youth groups, special-interest clubs, and other neighborhood organizations
contribute to favorable development, including self-confidence, school achievement,
education aspirations, and responsible social behavior (Barnes et al., 2007; Kerestes
&Youniss, 2003)(pg.28).Volunteering within their community will provide adolescents
with opportunities to learn about social responsibly, individual judgment and

Communities can give back to families by providing resources and programs to
promote positive family engagement can be useful as well. Resources such as
community food and clothing drive, providing educational supplies for families in
need in the community and educational classes for families to attend that provide
support. Promoting engaging family activities within communities can be used as a
stepping stone of building healthy family dynamics.

Bronfenbrenners Ecological System:

The Biolecological Theory identified by Urie Bronfenbrenner, theorized
that development is determined by social relationships and various
environmental factors. Bronfenbrenners development is known as the
ecological model, which is built upon systems that influence a childs
development. Bronfenbrenners Mesosystem in particular includes
interactions such as a childs immediate family, school and

These systems intertwine and uniquely influence the development of
each child. For instance, when communities provide youth & interest
clubs, it will affect a childs peer relationships and increase educational
opportunities, while providing avenues for positive family involvement,
which will foster a childs self concept.

Another example that contributes the development of this systems is
parenting style. How a parent chooses to parent will directly affect their
childs interlinking systems. If a child receives positive parent involvement
at home, it can lead to higher academic grades, positive social networks
and moral judgments.

There are many aspects to why a parent chooses their particular
parenting style, such as; the way they were raised, religion/customs, and
socioeconomic status. The type of parenting style that parents
incorporate within their family dynamic, relates to the type of relationship
the child has with their parent. According to Turner & Welch (2012),
Recent research further suggests that disengaged parenting styles, when
combined with families who live in dangerous or socially disorganized
neighborhoods, are linked with increased later-life delinquency in African
American and Latino boys (Roche, Ensminger, & Cherlin, 2007)(pg. 48).
The way a parent chooses to nurture, discipline and interact with their
child, plays a direct role in their childs development and growth.
Parents influence how their children will parent, and how they will form
relationships with their children. It important for parents to be positive
role models for their children and guide them in their path to adulthood.
One suggestion that our schools can incorporate within their
environment is to foster parent-child relationships by showing
compassion and understanding to each families unique culture, religious
views, and background. When parents feel respected and invited within
the childs education they are more eager to take active involvement,
which is vital in a childs development.
Communication is an essential key within a healthy parent-child
relationship. When parents communicate openly and effectively, it
provides a positive model for the child. How parents communicate with
their children influences the quality and the content of their relationships
(Turner & Welch, 2012, pg. 119). Children begin to form ideas and beliefs
about themselves based on how their parents communicate with them.
When children are able to express themselves openly, it supports their
emotional development and self-concepts. When parents communicate
effectively with their children, they are showing them respect. Children
then begin to feel that they are heard and understood by their parents,
which is a boost to self-esteem. Parents who provide their children with
plenty of love, understanding and acceptance are helping to create a
climate for open communication.
Teachers can support in building healthy communication by modeling
behavior techniques. When educators enforce consequences and praise
within their classroom, it offers adolescents opportunities to understand
and abide by rules and guidelines, which will foster their self-regulation
and problem solving skills. When teachers and parents rightly praise
children, it will foster their self-image and how they form relationships and
communicate with others. Using effective communication and positive
modeling within the classroom will further enrich relationships within the
home environment.
Volunteering is a great opportunity for adolescents to gain vital
skills and experiences. Children can learn about teamwork,
tolerance, self motivation and moral responsibility. Parents and
educators can support children in pro active volunteering by
appealing to their interests and hobbies. For instance, if a child
has an interest in gardening and enjoys nature, volunteering at
a local farm or nursery will be very educational and fun. It is
important for both educators and parents to utilize the
community to help children build self awareness and be a
proactive citizen.

One idea that can be implemented, is for schools to encourage
parents to volunteer at award ceremonies, celebrations, and
school events in and out of the classroom. The school can
promote volunteerism through monthly newsletters and reach
out programs within the community. This will give parents and
children the opportunity to volunteer, which will build a sense of
community and togetherness, and improve family and
community relationships.

Learning at Home
The way information and feedback is received from teachers to parents
is vital for the success of a childs development. Having an open line of
communication and a strategy to inform and update parents about
their childs progression is very essential. Keeping parents involved with
their childs educational progress will ensure that the child will be
getting the same plan of action at home that is consistent with their
classroom learning, which will encourage their progression. By being an
active participate within their childs development, parents will be able
encourage, support and monitor their childs experiences.

An idea that can be implemented within school, is teachers enlisting
parents/caregivers to sign off on all homework weekly, monthly
progress reports, and calendar of important assignments. If child is not
advancing within class, teachers will take action by effectively
communicating with parents about their childs academic weakness.
Teachers can provide informational resources to parents at PTO
meetings to guide parents to helping their children at home and what to
expect over the year. Teachers can also discuss with parents how vital
home learning is to their childs development and future success.
Providing parents with the necessary education to aiding their children
will encourage a positive family environment, while also promoting
growth outside of school.

Decision Making
Parents involved in school decisions and activities can play a vital
role in achieving goals that help students. Parent organizations
are a driving force to fundraisers that benefit the school and the
students. Parental committees can be instrumental in school
improvements that revitalize and focus energy on students. This
type of parental involvement helps students to benefit by seeing
a parental role in school decision-making and helps parents to
advocate more effectively for student benefits.

Decision making within a school community is a very important
aspect, and when teachers use the resources around them to
support childrens needs it will positively affect growth. The
school can utilize an open door policy where parents are
welcome to join, observe and volunteer within their childs
classroom. Parents who are in frequent contact with the school
send a message to their child about the value of education,
model constructive solutions to academic problems, and ( as
children get older) promote wise educational decisions(Berk,
2013, pg. 647). Faculty can use PTO meetings as an aid to
connecting directly with parents and communicating options they
would like to see within the school.
Collaborating with Community
Collaborating with the community can offer schools and parents a wide
range of resources that can enrich a childs environment and encourage
development. For instance, small businesses and local organizations can
promote learning through hands on activities and experiences. When
children are given opportunities to relate education to real world
applications, it enhances their learning and critical thinking skills. As stated
by Berk (2013) Furthermore, high school students who view their community
as one in which adults care about youths and work to make the community
better report higher levels of civic participation (Kahne& Sporte, 2008)(pg.
508).When partnerships form within the community, it gives positive feedback
and modeling for children.
To build a relationship between students and community, educators can
instruct a class assignment that involves giving back to the community and
offering children the experience to explore the opportunities within their
diverse community. For instance, grouping children together for a service
project in teams and giving them various local non-profit organizations and
businesses to research and serve, can give children a hands on learning
experience along with fostering civic responsibility. It is very important for
children to be active within their community to relate to others and identify
w their own personal moral ideals and responsibilities.
