Alloy

“Alloy is a homogeneous mixture of two or more elements, at least one of which is a metal and the resulting material has metallic properties.” E.g. steel, stainless steel, aluminium alloys, copper alloys are brass (copper + zinc) and bronze (copper + tin) etc Benefits: They have following benefits: • Low density • Improved corrosion resistance • Less brittle • More harder • Have a more desirable color and luster Effect of alloying elements on the mechanical properties: • The alloying elements enhance the properties of metals to produce desirable properties. • Main alloying elements are carbon, silicon, nickel, sulphur, vanadium, tungsten, phosphorus, cobalt, boron, chromium, molybdenum and manganese. • Alloys specially designed for highly demanding applications, such as jet engines, may contain more than ten elements.
