Decide where you want to live
There are a few different housing options for
exchange students. On-campus OR off-
campus, you get to decide. Remember: If
you are coming on exchange ONLY for the
fall semester, you MUST look for off-
campus housing. Check out this website

We also highly recommend that you book
temporary housing if you are going to wait
to rent an apartment until you arrive. Check

Find out about MUN Mentors
The MUN Mentors program is a peer
mentorship program for international &

exchange students whereby you are matched
with and mentored by current MUN students
during your first semester at Memorial
University. This is a great way to get to
know the academic and social side of

Decide when you will arrive and book
your flight
Check out the important dates (when classes
begin, when you can move into your
accommodation, etc,) and book your flight
accordingly. Dont forget that St. Johns
Newfoundland airport code is YYT! For

While you cannot register for courses online,
it will be a good idea to see your final class
schedule. By logging into Memorial Self-
Service, you can see your class schedule;
pay your health insurance fees and a whole
lot more.

Study Permits
Not every exchange student coming to Canada needs a study permit. However, if you are
planning on studying for longer than 6 months OR if you plan on working while you are here,
you need to apply for a Study Permit. Want to find out more? This website

combination of big-city luxury and small-town charm. As
the oldest and most easterly city in North America, this is

shopping centres (Avalon Mall
& the Village) which are
accessible by public
transportation. The Kelsey Drive
complex is also accessible by
public transport and has a
grocery store.

Climate & Clothing
St. Johns has a moderate
climate, with average
temperatures ranging from
2.0 C in the winter to 20.1 C
in the summer. Being on the
eastern edge of North America,
it is not uncommon for St.
Johns to experience wet
weather, so dont forget your
rain gear!
Local Transportation
St. Johns has a public transport
system called Metrobus. The bus
takes passes or coin (no paper
money) and does not issue
change; the cost to ride the bus is
as follows:
$2.25 per ride
$20.00 for 10-ride pass
$70.00 for 30 day pass
$245.00 for semester
pass

friends, you may wish to get
internet access or purchase
services for your home. There
are retailers located in Avalon
Mall, Stavanger Drive and
Village Mall areas. For free
wireless internet access on
campus, you will need to visit
the Library to get set up. If you
live on campus, you can visit
Hatcher House, Room 316.

Electricity
Canadian electricity uses 110
volts/50 cycles and sockets
generally only take plugs with
two flat pins. If you are bringing
your own electrical equipment,
find out if it can be used safely
on this voltage or whether you
will need an adaptor.

Food
The main grocery stores in St.
Johns are called Sobeys, &
Dominion. There are various
locations and are easily walk-
able or accessible by public
transportation.


Restaurants & Bars
St. Johns has a wide variety of
restaurants and bars. Many of
these are found downtown, but
there are many other locations
throughout the city.

Culture & Music
St. Johns is well-known for the
vibrant local music scene. Many
top Canadian artists first started
their careers playing in
downtown St. Johns. The
Provincial museum, The Rooms,
is also located in St, Johns. We
recommend visiting on a
Wednesday evening entrance
