How to Define Love
“How on earth are you ever going to explain in terms of chemistry and physics so important a biological phenomenon as first love?” — Albert Einstein Love is difficult to define. How do you avoid confusing it with infatuation or lust? Philosophers and psychologists both have attempted to define love, per least its difference from infatuation and lust. If you are looking to find love, the following observations may be helpful. Love is much more than a risk, but is a risk that one can take and grasp and fall into a dark abyss or dig oneself a hole and only crawl back when you overcome your emotions. How can one truly define what love is? Not even an experienced person can truly grasp or explain love to its truest and deepest meaning. Its concepts are just a never ending story of an open book of experiences. But love does lie in one's heart, where memories are but shadows lingering in your soul.

The dictionary defines love in several ways in which we use the word. For example, love is: 1. A strong positive emotion of; affection or pleasure; e.g, "His love for his work." or "I love cooking." 2. Any object of warm affection or devotion or liking: "The theater was her first love". "I love French food". 3. Beloved: a beloved person; used as a term of endearment.

4. A deep feeling of sexual desire and attraction; e.g., "She was his first love" or "She loves her husband." 5. A score of zero in tennis or squash: "It was 40-love!"

6. Sexual love: sexual intercourse between two people. e.g. "They made love." "He hadn't had any love in months".

Love is characterized by the desire to want good things for that person no matter what. And you're willing to work out your problems together. And you can hardly breathe when you're around them. Even though you may see them all the time or hardly ever, it's as if you get that rush of what you felt when you got your first kiss. 3. The Greeks defined love in four categories: 1. Agape love is unconditional love. It is love by "choice" even if you are not pleased. A good example is "God loves us with our faults." 2. Philia love is the dispassionate virtuous love, guided by our likes or our healthy or unhealthy needs and desires. 3. Storge is the word for family love and the physical show of "affection", the need for physical touch. Sometimes the love between exceptional friends. See also: WikiPedia:Storge 4. Eros is the physical "sexual" desire, intercourse. It is the root word of erotic, and eroticism. 4. Define love by thinking of what it means to you. Be bold and write down the feelings and thoughts you have about love. 5. Be aware of moments when you feel love towards anyone or anything. 6. Consider your motives, what are you each getting from the situation, especially if it is progressing too quickly. 7. Think about whether you'd feel the same way if the other person's looks were to change (is it just attraction). 8. Capture your feelings in metaphors, poetry or songs. "Love is like..." 9. Define love like a psychologist: love can be viewed as having three parts, triangularly. There are three key components: 1. Passion underlies physical desire, sexual behavior, and arousal. This is the physical side. 2. Intimacy is the emotional aspect: closeness, connectedness, and warmth of friendship. 3. Commitment is the decision-making part "CHOICE" of love; are couples willing to work it out? 10. Expressing love may start as flirting with smiles, winks and maybe even kissing, but it is usuallyinfatuation at this point, approaching with curiosity by one or both parties. While time is usually spent looking to discover more about this intriguing person, much time will be spent pondering the many possibilities of what could happen, or the consequences that may become of a certain action, or on the other hand the good that may come of it. 11. Thrill as the person in love having little else of such interest in the real world, food may taste bland, concentrating has become a serious mental struggle and even fun pastimes may seem worthless, as pacing and walking or even simply sitting or lying while musing about the person seems a most engaging thing to do.

o This type of behavior can lead to serious disturbances at work and at home, especially if the person feeling love is already an item with somebody else with whom they may have shared these feelings at some time in the past.
2. Deeply in love--never scientifically proven to exist--it is thought that one can only be

really in love with one person at a time. The part of the human being that is reserved for sharing with another (which some may call the soul, or the heart) is used up while dedicating itself to that one source, and that it is impossible to feel the overwhelming feeling of love in two sources: "twice-at-once" sounds impossible! o Although similar, love is thought not to be like pain which has definite locations; it is thought that it can move around, although usually it will reside in the lower stomach or the bottom of the throat, with sensitive areas like the temples and the legs and joints feeling stressed and weak. The mouth is often dry and the eyes seem strained, and this is all usually given the diagnosis of love sickness, or in some cases where love isn't present, influenza.
3. Endure for a time. Time does seem to be the only healer in the case of lost love.

The full connection of two loving parties (mutually) could lead to a stronger relationship, and developments such as procreation and marriage; but in the case of a single party or the rejection of the first party by the second, or even in the case of a secret love, being in love will usually only fade after the interest is out of sight and out of mind, or gives full closure to the pursuer. 4. Love forever (especially in literature)--it is forever. No matter how much time passes by, or what obstacles become present in the path of true and pure love, love will endure. This may be far fetched from reality, but many find it to be a preferable way to think. o Although this may be a much more joyous belief to have of love, there are also those situations where love does fail. This can be easily said to have been due to false love of mistaken identity between persons (as lovers are star crossed and are meant to find each other). Either way, the difference between feeling love and not feeling it is a distinct one, and cannot be mistaken. It is a true sickness that is present and can be more crippling than the flu, depression and many other illnesses combined. o Love can cause war; in the cases of love of religion and the love of money; war can cause people to steal and murder, it can lead to suicide and shatter marriage and family life, it can spread disease and give birth to evil; but love is eternal and cannot be eliminated, it is what makes people human. "I think therefore I am" may also be translated as "I love therefore I am".
5. Allow yourself to think so you may choose why, where and when to find your

life partner not just for simple breeding or survival of the fittest, but in order for developing and choosing as human beings not just feeling beings. 6. Share your love and spread it on through new generations, so while love lasts eternally, your mark upon humanity is also forever through your children and children's children; you make your mark by your genetic codes, understandings and teachings continuing--passed on and developed forevermore! o This eternal possibility is a gift, not just dedication; you have to choose as we were born with conscientiousness, not like animals who only have instinct. o Desire is the want of more and is unfillable, not to be confused with Love which is joy and contentment.

There are many combinations, all of which form some kind of love. Is there passion and friendship but very little commitment? This is defined as "passionate love." Are you committed but feel no passion or friendship? This is called "empty love." What most people ultimately desire, is "TRUE LOVE" the total package: passion, intimacy, friendship and commitment in one healthy relationship. It's the most fulfilling love. It is unconditional, and in my opinion the only "CHOICE".

For inspiration, read Elizabeth Barrett Browning's famous poem, "How Do I Love Thee?"

For additional inspiration, you might want to consider this Shakespeare quotation: "Love is not love/Which alters when it alteration finds" (Sonnet 116)

Spiritually Speaking

It is also said that love is one of God's greatest, most complex creations, and even that "God is love!" • What greater love is there than one would risk or give his life for a sinner, but in this way God proved His love for us. While we were still sinners and enemies to God: He provided a way for us to receive His greatest gift of love.

• •

Just because you feel love doesn't mean the other person does!

People are capable of falling in and out of love so if your "true love" turns out to be abusive or makes you cry more than smile, end it and find a healthy person to love. • Remember there are levels of love, and true love is a "CHOICE" and just because someone says they love you doesn't mean they do love you. Their actions will tell.

"Love is not a feeling, it's an ability."

Love can take over your whole life if you are not careful. Let it not take you over, but become a part of who you are. When you think about the person you love it should make you want to be a better person, for them.
Basically “LOVE” is a unique feeling that can’t be defined if we really live it. On the contrary it can be defined with all its technicalities for all other purposes. To be very straight and simple, “Love” can be defined as the behavioral approach between two persons that involves affection, emotion and sentiments. Here we have tried to define love through several definitions.  Love is a feeling of strong connection and attachment those are persuaded by extreme delight and admiration; dedication and devotion to each other along with affection and tenderness.

 love. 

Love is not a necessity, but it is life's greatest gift and luxury. It is to care, to be kind

and patient. It is considered as perfect love when a person doesn't expect anything else but Love knows when to put pride to the side, because the greatest thing one can be proud Love is or should be unconditional. And thus is giving and selfless, it is a celebration of For the unperfected will pass upon, the coming of that which is perfect, as perfect love Love is undying devotion. Love is the desire to be intimate both physically and emotionally. Love endures all, hopes all, and bears all. It is believing, sharing and dreaming. Love is a feeling of completeness, forgiving, understanding and inspiring. Love is the attainment of life's greatest inspiration. It is supporting, but not Love is a complete expression of oneself or the other. it is being open to each other's Love can be strong, yet so fragile. There are those out there who have not been lucky enough to find it, some never will.

In addition, what one would call true love...love in its best, purest, truest sense is even rarer and harder to find.  The dream of finding and marrying for true love exists and concludes by everything falling into place.

Love is any of a number of emotions and experiences related to a sense of strong affection[1] and attachment. The word lovecan refer to a variety of different feelings, states, and attitudes, ranging from generic pleasure to intense interpersonal attraction. The word love can refer to a variety of different feelings, states, and attitudes, ranging from generic pleasure ("I loved that meal") to intense interpersonal attraction ("I love my girlfriend"). This diversity of uses and meanings, combined with the complexity of the feelings involved, makes love unusually difficult to consistently define, even compared to other emotional states. As an abstract concept, love usually refers to a deep, ineffable feeling of tenderly caring for another person. Even this limited conception of love, however,

encompasses a wealth of different feelings, from the passionate desire and intimacy of romantic love to the nonsexual emotional closeness of familial and platonic love[2] to the profound oneness or devotion of religious love.[3]Love in its various forms acts as a major facilitator of interpersonal relationships and, owing to its central psychological importance, is one of the most common themes in the creative arts. The English word "love" can have a variety of related but distinct meanings in different contexts. Often, other languages use multiple words to express some of the different concepts that English relies mainly on "love" to encapsulate; one example is the plurality of Greek words for "love." Cultural differences in conceptualizing love thus make it doubly difficult to establish any universal definition.[4] Although the nature or essence of love is a subject of frequent debate, different aspects of the word can be clarified by determining what isn't love. As a general expression of positive sentiment (a stronger form of like), love is commonly contrasted with hate (or neutral apathy); as a less sexual and more emotionally intimate form of romantic attachment, love is commonly contrasted with lust; and as an interpersonal relationship with romantic overtones, love is commonly contrasted with friendship, although other definitions of the word love may be applied to close friendships in certain contexts. When discussed in the abstract, love usually refers to interpersonal love, an experience felt by a person for another person. Love often involves caring for or identifying with a person or thing, including oneself (cf. narcissism). In addition to cross-cultural differences in understanding love, ideas about love have also changed greatly over time. Some historians date modern conceptions of romantic love to courtly Europe during or after the Middle Ages, although the prior existence of romantic attachments is attested by ancient love poetry.[5] Because of the complex and abstract nature of love, discourse on love is commonly reduced to a thought-terminating cliché, and there are a number of common proverbs regarding love, from Virgil's "Love conquers all" to the Beatles' "All you need is love." Bertrand Russell describes love as a condition of "absolute value," as opposed to relative value. Theologian Thomas Jay Oord said that to love is to "act intentionally, in sympathetic response to others, to promote overall well-being."[citation

Philosopher Gottfried Leibniz said that love is "to be delighted by the happiness

of another."[6]

YourDictionary defines love as a strong affection for a person or thing. The definition of love encompasses dozens of expressions of affection with varying degrees of intensity. Love includes feelings ranging from mild affection to intense sexual desire. Because love encompasses such a broad range of emotion, and may be related to so many people, places and things, the definition of love is unusually broad. The world "love" comes to us from the Middle English word luf, derived from the Old English word "lufu." This is akin to Old High German, "luba," and another Old English word, lēof, which means ‘dear’. Yet another word related to love, "lubere" or "libere," comes to us from the Romans. This Latin word means 'to please'. In all words related to the word love, roots relating to dear, pleasing, and cherished may be found, hinting at the deeper transcendent meaning of the modern word. Most people think of the definition of love as a strong romantic attachment between two people, often intermingled with sexual desire and attraction. Throughout history, people defined love more broadly, encompassing many relationships. These forms of love and affection hold true today, although may not be the first definition that comes to mind when one hears the word. For example: • • • Love among family members; familial love, or love based on kinship ties A mother’s love for her offspring Love of neighbor, based on the Christian teaching of expressing concern and charity for all people

• •

Love of country, or patriotism Love of God, or expressive love for a deity or deities

Nearly all religions and cultures use precise language to define love. Most languages use various words to express levels of emotion, kinship, or affection. Ancient Greek, for example, uses many words to define precise levels of emotion. “Agape” means love in modern day Greek, but in ancient times referred to a pure love without sexual connotations. “Eros” includes passionate love full of desire and longing. “Philia”, mentioned by Aristotle, meant a dispassionate, virtuous and unselfish love. “Xenia” includes hospitality, and refers to a type of love most would consider charity or giving. Our modern language uses the word love almost too frequently. We say “I love you” to our spouses, but say “I love chocolate ice cream!” to a friend to express a much less intense feeling. Some people define love not by a feeling, but by actions. In this definition, love isn’t what you say – it’s what you do. Love would then be a verb, expressed in unselfish actions and deeds. Romance is a general term that refers to a celebration of life often through art, music and the attempt to express love with words or deeds.[1] It also refers to a feeling of excitement associated with love.[2] Historically, the term "romance" did not necessarily imply love relationships, but rather was seen as an artistic expression of one's innermost desires; sometimes including love, sometimes not. Romance is still sometimes viewed as an expressionistic, or artful form, but within the context of "romantic love" relationships it usually implies an expression of one's love, or one's deep emotional desires to connect with another person. "Romance" in this sense can therefore be defined as attachment, fascination, or enthusiasm for something or someone, inliterature similar exaggerated narration is called romance.

What is Love

What is love? It is one of the most difficult questions for the mankind. Centuries have passed by, relationships have bloomed and so has love. But no one can give the proper definition of love. To some Love is friendship set on fire for others Maybe love is like luck. You have to go all the way to find it. No matter how you define it or feel it, love is the eternal truth in the history of mankind. Love is patient, love is kind. It has no envy, nor it boasts itself and it is never proud. It rejoices over the evil and is the truth seeker. Love protects; preserves and hopes for the positive aspect of life. Always stand steadfast in love, not fall into it. It is like the dream of your matter of affection coming true. Love can occur between two or more individuals. It bonds them and connects them in a unified link of trust, intimacy and interdependence. It enhances the relationship and comforts the soul. Love should be experienced and not just felt. The depth of love can not be measured. Look at the relationship between a mother and a child. The mother loves the child unconditionally and it can not be measured at all. A different dimension can be attained between any relationships with the magic of love. Love can be created. You just need to focus on the goodness of the other person. If this can be done easily, then you can also love easily. And remember we all have some positive aspect in us, no matter how bad our deeds maybe. And as God said Love all

Depending on context, love can be of different varieties. Romantic love is a deep, intense and unending. It shared on a very intimate and interpersonal and sexual relationship. The term Platonic love, familial love and religious love are also matter of great affection. It is more of desire, preference and feelings. The meaning of love will change with each different relationship and depends more on its concept of depth, versatility, and complexity. But at times the very existence of love is questioned. Some say it is false and meaningless. It says that it never exist, because there has been many instances of hatred and brutality in relationships. The history of our world has witnessed many such events. There has been hatred between brothers, parents and children, sibling rivalry and spouses have failed each other. Friends have betrayed each other; the son has killed his parents for the throne, the count is endless. Even the modern generation is also facing with such dilemmas everyday. But love is not responsible for that. It is us, the people, who have forgotten the meaning of love and have undertaken such gruesome apathy. In the past the study of philosophy and religion has done many speculations on the phenomenon of love. But love has always ruled, in music, poetry, paintings, sculptor and literature. Psychology has also done lot of dissection to the essence of love, just like what biology, anthropology and neuroscience has also done to it. Psychology portrays love as a cognitive phenomenon with a social cause. It is said to have three components in the book of psychology: Intimacy, Commitment, and Passion. Also, in an ancient proverb love is defined as a high form of tolerance. And this view has been accepted and advocated by both philosophers and scholars. Love also includes compatibility. But it is more of journey to the unknown when the concept of compatibility comes into picture. Maybe the person whom we see in front of us, may be least compatible than the person who is miles away. We might talk to each other and portray that we love each other, but practically we do not end up into any relationship. Also in compatibility, the key is to think about the long term successful relationship, not a short journey. We need to understand each other and must always remember that no body is perfect. Be together, share your joy and sorrow, understand each other, provide space to each other, but always be there for each others need. And surely love will blossom to strengthen your relationship with your matter of affection. Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none. William Shakespeare.

Chapman's Five Emotional Love Languages:

Words of Affirmation This is when you say how nice your spouse looks, or how great the dinner tasted. These words will also build your mate's self image and confidence. Quality Time Some spouses believe that being together, doing things together and focusing in on one another is the best way to show love. If this is your partner's love language, turn off the TV now and then and give one another some undivided attention. Gifts It is universal in human cultures to give gifts. They don't have to be expensive to send

a powerful message of love. Spouses who forget a birthday or anniversary or who never give gifts to someone who truly enjoys gift giving will find themselves with a spouse who feels neglected and unloved. Acts of Service Discovering how you can best do something for your spouse will require time and creativity. These acts of service like vacuuming, hanging a bird feeder, planting a garden, etc., need to be done with joy in order to be perceived as a gift of love. Physical Touch Sometimes just stroking your spouse's back, holding hands, or a peck on the cheek will fulfill this need.

Determining Your Own Love Language Since you may be speaking what you need, you can discover your own love language by asking yourself these questions: • How do I express love to others? • What do I complain about the most? • What do I request most often? Speaking in your spouse's love language probably won't be natural for you. Dr. Chapman says, "We're not talking comfort. We're talking love. Love is something we do for someone else. So often couples love one another but they aren't connecting. They are sincere, but sincerity isn't enough." Emotional Experiences The number one emotional experience reported by folks is feeling the presence of God in their lives. The emotional high of being in love (which generally lasts around 2 years) is the second highest emotional experience that people reportedly have. That is why it can be so difficult to try and talk some sense into someone who is in the midst of falling in love. Chapman stated that obsessive love can render people mentally incompetent. "There's not much difference between being in love and being insane." Fading Tingle and Empty Love Tanks After the first or second year of marriage, when the initial "tingle" is starting to fade, many couples find that their "love tanks" are empty. They may have been expressing love for their spouse, but in reality they may have been speaking a different love language. The best way to fill your spouse's love tank is to express love in their love language. Each of us has a primary love language. Usually, couples don't have the same love language. Tank Check

Dr. Chapman recommends that you have a "Tank Check" 3 nights a week for 3 weeks. Ask one another "How is your love tank tonight?" If, on a scale from zero to ten, it is less than 10, then ask "What can I do to help fill it?" Then do it to the best of your ability. However, the one topic that has remained a favorite with authors, playwrights, poets, and laypeople alike has been: love. Each of the quotes below is a quotation of love! Doc Childre The greatest gift a parent can give a child during all the ups and downs of life is love. Sydney Smith Marriage resembles a pair of shears, so joined that they cannot be separated; often moving in opposite directions, yet always punishing any one who comes between them. Honore de Balzac One should believe in marriage as in the immortality of the soul. Amy Bloom Marriage is not a ritual or an end. Scientific proof that we all need love
Wednesday, 28 June 2006 Love is one of the most confusing and wonderful parts of life. There is perhaps no subject about which so many stories, songs and poems have been written. Speculation about it is always an area of fascination, particularly for women. But what is love and do we really need it? It's common to hear people say they're happy to be alone and can live without it. If you have an interest in this subject, the experiments of famed American psychologist Harry Harlow from the 1950s onwards are worth hearing about. He arguably did more to expand our

understanding of the psychological underpinnings of love than anyone before him. Before I continue, readers should be aware that the experiments I'm going to talk about involve animals - specifically monkeys. Some of these can be viewed as disturbing and cruel, and if you don't wish to hear about such things, now's the time to stop reading and explore elsewhere on the site. Let me say up-front, that I find some of these experiments uncomfortable to hear about also. But the results are so fascinating that they're difficult to ignore. There could be an interesting ethical debate on this point about whether the ends justify the means, but that's a subject for another article. Dr Harlow conducted his experiments on love using infant macaque monkeys, because of the similarity of behavior they display with human children. "The macaque infant differs from the human infant in that the monkey is more mature at birth and grows more rapidly," Harlow said in a paper on the subject, "but the basic responses relating to affection, including nursing, contact, clinging, and even visual and auditory exploration, exhibit no fundamental differences in the two species. Even the development of perception, fear, frustration, and learning capability follows very similar sequences in rhesus monkeys and human children." Harlow's interest was mainly in how love developed between mother and child, and the effects of that relationship on later responses to affection. He first got the idea for his experiments when he noticed that baby monkeys separated from their mothers developed emotional attachments to gauze cloths used to keep their cages clean. When the cloths were removed, the monkeys would often throw temper tantrums until they were returned. Harlow speculated that the cloths might be being used as surrogate mothers. To test his theory, he created two fake mothers for his baby monkeys - one made of wire and one made of cloth and warmed from within by a light bulb. Both "mothers" were given a face, and a "breast" in the form of a bottle from which the babies could feed. Both fulfilled all the biological needs of their "children", feeding them and so forth, but only the cloth mother was made with comfort in mind. The monkeys showed very little interest in the wire mothers, but developed strong attachments to the cloth mothers - clinging to them tightly and becoming distressed when they were removed. Even if two mothers were provided - a wire one with milk and a cloth one without - the monkeys would prefer the latter. The conclusion was that comfort was much more important to the babies than other variables such as feeding. If Harlow separated baby monkeys from their new cloth mothers, even for long periods, the importance of the relationship was never forgotten. As soon as their surrogate mother was returned, the monkeys would immediately rush to cling desperately to her. The babies given cloth mothers also grew to be more psychologically stable than those who had only wire mothers. This was demonstrated when they were put into dangerous and strange situations, such as having noisy toy-robots put into the cages with them. Those with cloth mothers to cling to during the ordeal showed a much greater level of bravery, and much less negative emotion, than those who had no surrogate comfort mother present. The level of psychological security given by these immobile mother figures was found to be very high. Monkeys who had been raised alone, with no such cloth surrogate, showed no emotional response when one was initially introduced to their cages. Although in time, they could also be shown to develop a strong attachment. In observation, the level of affection displayed in babies raised by a surrogate mother was very similar to that between a real mother and baby. Both types grew to be more psychologically and

physically healthy than those who were denied any type of mother, even though all biological needs were taken care of in all the subjects. At this point, Harlow's experiments grew darker. He began to design surrogate mothers that he called "Iron Maidens". These were mothers with all the comfortable features of the cloth mothers, but who also had the ability to turn evil. Without warning, they would prod their babies with metal spikes or blow cold air against them so hard that they were pushed against the side of the cage. Despite the cruelty of his "Iron Maidens", Harlow noticed something interesting. No matter how abusive the evil mothers were, the baby monkeys always came back and displayed affection towards them. Even in the face of abuse, the need for love was overwhelming. It seemed anything was preferable to being without it. Another interesting result came from these "tough-love" experiments. The worse the mothers abused their "children", the more needy those children became. This showed the myth that you can toughen people up against love by denying it to them is wrong. We need it, and removing it will just damage us, not make us stronger. Harlow's experiments, while sometimes dark, tell us a basic truth about ourselves. We are not just robots engaged in a mindless search for fulfilling our biological requirements. Instead, love is at the very center of our being. In fact, it can be shown to be more important to us than even our more basic physical needs. Harlow's means were definitely disturbing, but his results tell us something beautiful about what it means to be alive.

Types Of Boys...
Confused about your Boy...or Boy-to-be...or whatever? Just consult my handy-dandy guide to types of boys and you're smiling! This fortnight...The Computer Geek, The Busy Hands Boy, and The Untouchable Boy.Check back next fortnight for three new ones...and email me with suggestions if you know of any other types you want me to research at the usual address: boybabble@hotmail.com

The Computer Geek
How To Recognise Him: You probably know the type I'm talking about. He's very clever, probably in all the top sets. His main things are his computer, his gameboy, his playstation...you understand. That is his life. I do not wish to stereotype, but he will probably either have really nasty hair or he will put so much gel on it that it will resemble a pan of chip fat. He can be quite good-looking but doesn't really take much time on his appearance. He hangs around with other computer geeks and the chances are you won't be able to stand them. He can be outwardly funny and goofy but inside lurks a shy, sensitive little creature. Where You'll Find Him: Primarily, anywhere there is a computer. He may be in the library. Or, he will be hanging out with his friends in the usual computer geeks' hideout...your job is to find wherever your school's one is. He Likes: His computer and playstation/gameboy, obviously. He likes having a laugh, but you may find his sense of humour weird...whatever turns you on! He also likes girls, though it may not seem that obvious. He Dislikes: Losing a computer game, Other boys who are not on 'his level', and 'normality'. How To Get Him: If your usual flirting style is very outrageous, please don't try it on him. Chances are he's very shy, or failing that, just not interested. However, you will need to be obvious, because he may be clever but he's very dim when it comes to stuff like that. So Obvious, but NOT outrageous. If you know anything about computers or games or whatever, that'll impress him as a conversation starting point, but if not, please don't embarass yourself.

The Busy Hands Boy
How to recognise him: He's always chasing, following, or touching/hugging/putting his arm around some girl, and it's always a different one. The kind of boy you'd usually take a ten mile hike to avoid (well, that's me, not sure about you). Unfortunately, he's usually drop dead gorgeous and therefore very difficult to resist. He'll have gelled, spiky hair and a cheeky, flirty smile. He'll also have a looooooooooooong history of ex-girlfriends. Where You'll find him: Either with his mates talking (in a very degrading manner, obviously) ABOUT girls, or with a girl trying to butter her up. He's probably very popular, with a large group of friends, so chances are you'll know his territory anyway. He Likes: Jordan, Britney, J.Lo, Beyonce.....Girls in general He Dislikes: Girls kicking him where the sun don't shine. (When you're this kind of boy, it does

happen on a regular basis) How To Get Him: Basically, to get this boy, you have to play hard to get. He loves the challenge of the chase and if you give in to him straight away, the chances are he'll get bored with you. If he hasn't noticed you, flirt very outrageously with him so that he DOES notice you. Once you've got him eating out the palm of your hand, suddenly cool off. It'll leave him determined to get you, and once he does, he'll be much keener to hang on to you for as long as possible. It will also keep his hands away from any OTHER girl who dares to cross his path.

The Untouchable Boy
How To Recognise him: This one's not hard to recognise. He doesn't need to be fantastically good-looking (though this is often the case) but there's always SOME little thing about him that gets the girls flocking to him like sheep.Something you can't quite put your finger on. Loads of girls fancy the pants off him, but he is simply very, very, very picky. He doesn't want any of them. He'll have a haughty air, and probably a dry or cynical sense of humour. He's popular amongst his friends as the joker of the group. Where You'll Find Him: In the middle of his group of friends, making them all laugh, or blowing off some poor girl. He likes: Well, not many of the girls that like HIM, that's for sure. He likes his friends, and his playstation. He Dislikes: See above sentence about girls. He also hates being got the better of. How To Get Him: Similar strategy to busy-hands boy, but more subtle. First off, you HAVE to start an argument with him. A fun-one, obviously, not a serious one, or he'll never look at you again. That way, you'll always have a conversation-base and something to tease him with. And when this boy starts teasing you, you know you're on to a good thing. When he teases, you flirt and tease him back. Smile at him a lot...he likes that.

Types Of Boys
All boys are unique, some boys are more unique than others...

Every boy is unique. In our work in Scouting, it's important to remember that above pretty much everything else. There are, however, certain identifiable types of boys each of us has encountered throughout our life. Society may change and evolve, but boys will always be boys. To be an effective leader, whether you are a Scoutmaster or a Patrol Leader, it is important to not only understand these generalized types of boys, but to understand the individual boys in your charge. While the types listed below may be helpful to you in reaching and motivating some of the boys, most real life boys will fall between these types, having characteristics of several different types. Your job, as a Scout leader, is to get to know your boys, find out what makes them tick, and then find a way to focus their energy on the patrol and troop. It's not always an easy job, but you aren't alone in your work.

The Natural Born Leader
This type of boy naturally knows how to lead a group. Often, he'll be the natural choice of the Patrol as Patrol Leader. He has the raw talent, but sometimes lacks the experience and practice. For that reason, the Natural Born Leader isn't always seen as such. For the members of the patrol, he'll just be the guy they knowwill do a good job. His natural talents, though, need to be honed through training and practice.

The Smooth Running Boy
This type of boy takes things pretty much as they come. He's agreeable and easily led. He may or may not have initiative or ambition. He's equally at home in the sunshine, and the rain and nothing seems to get him down. In most things, he won't put forth a great deal of effort, but he won't shirk his responsibilities either.

The Passive Boy
This type of boy has no initiative at all. He has to be told to do everything. He will follow where his is led, but has to be led everywhere. Unlike the Smooth Running Boy, the Passive Boy won't put forth any effort without a little prodding. Unlike the Lazy Boy, he doesn't look for ways to get out of doing things.

The Clever Boy
His natural talent is to analyze everything. He's adept at discovering mistakes and weaknesses. He has the added talent of knowing how things work or should be done. He's a good choice for Assistant Patrol Leader because you definitely want him on your side. Left to his own devices, he'll point out the faults and mistakes the Patrol Leader makes, and will often comment "I would have done it better." For that reason, you want him right by your side, keeping you on your toes, and not sowing discontent within the patrol.

The Lazy Boy
Like the passive boy, the lazy boy has no initiative. Unlike the passive boy, who will complete tasks and work hard if asked to do so, the lazy boy simply prefers not to do anything. He lacks the energy and motivation of even the passive boy. He'll tend to complain about anything that requires energy, or takes him away from his preferred activity (whatever that is). You'll have to keep an eye on him because he's prone to taking short-cuts and doesn't put much thought into the short-cut he takes.

The Troublemaker
This type of boy naturally attracts trouble like a magnet. At times, he doesn't even have to work at it. Sometimes, however, he works very hard at it. He can really take the life out of any activity or meeting, and will certainly test your ability to control the group. It doesn't matter why the Troublemaker attracts (or makes) trouble. The easiest way to handle him is to keep him busy.

The Grouchy Boy

Nothing satisfies this type of boy. He can never find anything good about anything; the weather, the food, the activity. He can find ten reasons not to do something for every reason to do it. He's like a wet blanket on campouts and hikes, dragging everyone's spirits down.

The Wise-Guy
Like the Clever Boy, the Wise-Guy is particularly adept at discovering mistakes and weaknesses. Unlike the Clever Boy, who tends to figure out how to fix it before speaking up, the Wise-Guy leaps before he looks. He can be a real asset if you can get him to stop and think before he does or says anything.

The Bully
Part Wise-Guy, part Troublemaker, part Grouch, the Bully delights in dominating everything. He brags about his abilities, and uses intimidation to get his way. Any boy is capable of challenging the Patrol Leader's authority from time to time, but the Bully will seize every opportunity to do so, and he'll do whatever it takes to be the boss. The good thing is that most Bullies don't like it when people stand up to them, so the best way to handle a Bully is to not let him win.
