Content Objective/Learning Outcome
Students will be able to identify things they can do and say to be a bucketfiller.
Students will be able to classify/categorize behaviors as either bucket fillers or bucket dippers.
Students will be able to name reasons to be a bucket filler.

Language Objective/Language Learning Outcome
Students will use descriptive language to retell an occurrence and the emotions they experienced.

Formative Assessment Tasks:
Throughout the read aloud, check for understanding by asking students to nod for
agreement. Have them retell what happened on the page to a partner. Take note of what they say
when they come up with ideas for how to fill someones bucket. I will walk around the room and
listen to as many conversations as possible during partner talks.

Summative Assessment Tasks
Take notes on how they respond during the closure. Pay attention to what may need to be
re-taught or emphasized.

Materials Needed
Have You Filled A Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud (Nelson Publishing & Marketing, 2007)
Large sand bucket & examples of bucket fillers and bucket dippers
Large bucket posters (one per student)

-non-verbal responses
-wait time

Instructional Sequence:


-I will write the words Respect, Responsibility, and Caring on the board.
-Discussion about the meanings of these character traits will take place.
-I will tell students that they are going to learn about another way they can show respect, make
responsible choices and be caring each day in and out of school.
-I will show class a large sand bucket and solicit ideas from students about what it is and why the I
have it.
-After interest has built, I will read Have you Filled a Bucket Today? to the class.
-Throughout the reading, ask questions such as:
1. How can you tell if someones bucket is empty or full?
2. How do you feel when your bucket is empty? Full?
3. What can you do to fill someones bucket? How does that make you feel?
4. What happens to your bucket when you dip into someone elses?
5. What can we do here, in our class and school, to make sure that everyones bucket is full?

-After reading the book, the I will lead a Sorting Activity, where students will identify
behaviors and comments as either bucket fillers or bucket dippers. Those that are bucket fillers
will go in the large sand bucket and those that are bucket dippers will go in the trash can.
-Make a chart of ideas as a class for how we can be bucket fillers. Do think pair share before
asking for responses. Give students wait time.
-Say Today and every day, we want to try to fill as many buckets as we can. After lunch, we will
today, we will have time to share out how someone filled your bucket and how you filled someone
elses bucket.


-After lunch, bring students to rug and say Who would like to share a way that they filled someones
bucket today at lunch and recess?
-Now, who would like to share a way that someone else filled your bucket? How did that make you
-What are some ways we can fill each others buckets during the rest of the day today?
-If running out of time, do a few as a class and the rest as a partner talk.
