HY DOES the giraffe have a purple tongue? Why does the
horned frog have such an enormous mouth? And what on
earth is growing on the star-nosed mole’s face?
The odd features of these creatures are there for a
perfectly good reason. The Caldecott Honor-winning team
of Steve Jenkins and Robin Page give readers a unique
perspective on these amazing creatures and their unusual
features by asking the animals to explain themselves!

Print the following pages on card stock using a color printer. Cut
out each mask and eye holes as indicated. Tape a craft stick to the
back of each mask so the stick can act as a handle, or tie elastic
cording around small holes poked on the sides of each mask. Wear
your masks with pride! Can you explain each creature’s unusual
feature to your friends?
