“FIREFIGHTERS SAVE LIVES, TRAINING SAVES
FIREFIGHTERS”
 Review this powerpoint presentation, and then
complete the test questions found at the end of the
presentation. You will not receive credit for this drill if
you do not complete the test.
I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK AND LARRY

 PPE IS ESSENTIAL TO FIREFIGHTER SAFETY

 TO BE EFFECTIVE, IT MUST BE WORN
APPROPRIATELY AND AT ALL TIMES
 PROTECTS THE HEAD FROM FALLING
OBJECTS, INCLUDING SCALDING WATER AND
DEBRIS
 EAR FLAPS SHOULD BE WORN IN THE DOWN
POSITION
 CHIN STRAP SHOULD BE SECURED TIGHTLY
 VISOR OR BOURKES GLASSES SHOULD BE
USED WHEN THERE IS POTENTIAL FOR EYE
INJURIES
 BUT THEY DO NOT CONSTITUTE PRIMARY EYE
PROTECTION
 SAFETY GLASSES MUST BE WORN IN
CONJUNCTION WITH VISOR/BOURKES
 PROTECTS EXPOSED SKIN OF THE NECK AND
FACE

 MUST BE WORN WHEN FIGHTING FIRES

 SHOULD BE WORN OVER THE SCBA MASK
 PROVIDES PROTECTION FROM HEAT

 ALSO PROTECTS FROM PUNCTURES,
ABRASIONS, ETC

 IT IS FIRE RETARDANT

 IT IS NOT FIRE PROOF
 PROTECTS THE HANDS FROM BURNS, CUTS,
AND OTHER INJURIES

 EXTRICATION GLOVES ARE NOT FIREFIGHTING
GLOVES

 WEAR THE RIGHT GLOVE FOR THE JOB
 PROTECTS YOUR FEET, ANKLES AND SHINS

 HAVE A STEEL TOE AND STEEL SHANK TO
PROVIDE MAXIMUM PROTECTION
 MEANT TO BE WORN DURING ALL NON-
FIREFIGHTING ACTIVITIES

 PROVIDES BOTH DAY AND NIGHT TIME
ILLUMINATION
SAFETY VEST VIDEO
 EVERY YEAR NUMEROUS FIREFIGHTERS DIE FROM
BEING HIT BY VEHICLES
 THE MAJORITY OF THESE DEATHS ARE PREVENTABLE
 SAFETY VESTS ARE PROVEN TO REDUCE INJURIES AND
FATALITIES AND ARE REQUIRED BY LAW TO BE WORN
AT ALL TIMES
 “IF YOUR FEET ARE ON THE STREET, THE VEST IS ON
YOUR CHEST”
 THE ONLY TIME YOUR VEST IS NOT REQUIRED TO BE
WORN IS WHEN:
-YOU ARE INVOLVED IN FIRE EXTINGUISHMENT
ACTIVITIES
-THE EMERGENCY SCENE IS ENTIRELY SHUT DOWN TO
MOTOR VEHICLES
 “TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT” IS USING OUR
APPARATUS TO BLOCK AN INCIDENT SCENE
FROM MOVING VEHICLES
 THIS PROVIDES A SAFER WORK AREA FOR
OUR PRESONNEL AND PROVIDES A BUFFER
ZONE FROM ONCOMING TRAFFIC
 APPARATUS ARE PARKED ON AN ANGLE
(CALLED THE “BLOCKING POSITION”) IN ORDER
TO TUNNEL TRAFFIC IN THE APPROPRIATE
DIRECTION (SEE DIAGRAM)
 SMALLER VEHICLES (AMBULANCES, CHIEFS)
PARK CLOSEST TO THE INCIDENT SCENE
 LARGER APPARTUS (ENGINES) PARK FARTHER
AWAY AND ACT AS THE MAIN BUFFER
 RESCUE 5 SHOULD BE PARKED CLOSE TO THE
SCENE SO EQUIPMENT IS EASILY
ACCESSABLE, BUT SHOULD STILL BE PARKED
IN A BLOCKING POSITION
 FIRE POLICE SHOULD SET UP ADVANCED
WARNING SIGNS (FLAGS, CONES, FLARES) TO
ALERT ONCOMING TRAFFIC OF THE EMERGENCY
SCENE
 THESE SHOULD BE PLACED A MINIMUM OF 500
FEET FROM THE START OF THE EMERGENCY
SCENE
 AN ADDITIONAL FIRE POLICE MEMBER SHOULD BE
PLACED AT THE WORK AREA AND ACTS AS A LOOK
OUT TO ALERT PERSONNEL OF ANY VEHICLES
THAT MAY ENTER THE WORK AREA
 SAFETY CONES SHOULD ALSO BE PLACED
AROUND THE PERIMETER OF THE EMERGENCY
SCENE
FIRE TRUCK CRASH

 EVERY YEAR, APPROXIMATELY 20% OF ALL
FIREFIGHTER FATALITIES OCCUR WHILE
RESPONDING TO OR RETURNING FROM AN
INCIDENT

 THIS NUMBER IS UNACCEPTABLE AND CAN BE
SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED BY USING COMMON
SENSE AND OBEYING TRAFFIC LAWS
 IF OPERATING YOUR VEHICLE WHILE USING A BLUE
LIGHT:

 YOU MUST OBEY ALL TRAFFIC LAWS!

 NO SPEEDING, NO PASSING MOVING VEHICLES, NO
DRIVING LIKE AN IDIOT

 SEATBELTS ARE A MUST!

 CLEAR YOUR WINDOWS OF SNOW AND ICE BEFORE
DRIVING

 REMEMBER – USING A BLUE LIGHT IS A PRIVELAGE. IT IS
ONLY A CURTOSY LIGHT AND DOES NOT REQUIRE OTHER
MOTORISTS TO YIELD THE RIGHT OF WAY
 IF OPERATING AN APPARATUS WITH RED LIGHTS:
 YOU MUST DRIVE WITH DUE REGARD FOR THE
SAFETY OF YOUR CREW AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC
 YOU MAY ONLY DISOBEY TRAFFIC LAWS AFTER YOU
HAVE DETERMINED THAT IT IS SAFE TO DO SO
 DON’T ASSUME ANYTHING – YOU MUST VERIFY THAT
OTHOR MOTORISTS HAVE INDEED YIELDED THE
RIGHT OF WAY
 REMEMBER – JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE ALLOWED TO
DISOBEY TRAFFIC LAWS DOESN’T MEAN THAT YOU
HAVE TO
 SEATBELTS, SEATBELTS, SEATBELTS!!!
NEW YORK SEATBELT VIDEO

 PLEASE ALWAYS WEAR YOUR SEATBELTS

 GEAR SHOULD BE DONNED PRIOR TO BOARDING THE
APPARATUS

 SEATBELTS ARE TO BE WORN WHENEVER THE APPARATUS
IS IN MOTION

 AIR PACKS ARE TO BE DONNED UPON ARRIVING AT THE
SCENE, AFTER THE APPARATUS HAS PARKED

 BESIDES, THIS ALSO GIVES YOU A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO
CONDUCT YOUR OWN SIZE-UP OF THE INCIDENT WHILE
DONNING YOUR AIR PACK
 AN EFFORT BY THE NATIONAL FALLEN
FIREFIGHTERS FOUNDATION
 A PROGRAM DESIGNED TO ENCOURAGE 100%
VOLUNTARY COMPLIANCE OF SEATBELT
USAGE BY FIREFIGHTERS
 PLEDGE TO WEAR YOUR SEATBELT, SO THAT
“EVERYONE GOES HOME”
 PLEASE SIGN THE PLEDGE BEING PASSED
AROUND TONIGHT, OR BY VISITING

NASCAR SEATBELT VIDEO
SCENE SAFETY VIDEO
 STAY SAFE WHILE OPERATING AT ANY
EMERGENCY SCENE
 REMEMBER WHAT YOU LEARNED IN YOUR
BASIC FIREFIGHTER CLASSES
 ALWAYS FOOT YOUR LADDER
 BE AWARE OF TRIPPING HAZARDS
 WEAR THE APPROPRIATE PPE
 WATCH OUT FOR THE SAFETY OF YOUR CREW
 ALWAYS USE THE ACCOUNTABILITY SYSTEM
 IF YOU NEED HELP, ASK FOR IT!
 USE COMMON SENSE
 CARDIAC EMERGENCIES ARE THE LEADING
CAUSE OF FIREFIGHTER DEATHS
 MANY OF THESE DEATHS CAN BE PREVENTED
 FIRST AND FOREMOST – YOU ARE IN CONTROL
OF YOUR HEALTH
 IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAINTAIN A
HEALTHY DIET AND EXERCISE REGIMEN
 DOCTORS RECOMMEND BETWEEN 30 AND 60
MINUTES OF CARDIO EXERSCISE EVERY DAY
 FIREFIGHTING ACTIVITES CAN PLACE A LOT OF
STRESS ON YOUR HEART
 EXPOSURE TO SMOKE AND OTHER PRODUCTS OF
COMBUSTION CAN LEAD TO SUDDEN CARDIAC
ARREST
 HEAVY PHYSICAL EXERTION CAN SIGNIFICANTLY
INCREASE YOUR HEART RATE, WHICH CAN LEAD TO
A HEART ATTACK
 HEAT STRESS CAN LEAD TO CARDIAC
DISRHYTHMIAS OR CARDIAC ARREST
 STUDIES HAVE ALSO LINKED NOISE EXPOSURE
(SIRENS, AIRHORNS, ETC) TO INCREASED
OCCURANCES OF HYPERTENSION
 TO PREVENT CARDIAC EMERGENCIES ON THE
FIREGROUND:
 STAY HYDRATED
 ALWAYS REHAB AFTER INTENSE PHYSICAL
EXERTION
 WEAR YOUR SCBA WHEN EXPOSED TO SMOKE
AND GASSES (INCLUDING DURING OVERHAUL,
AS THIS IS THE TIME WHEN TOXIC GASSES ARE
MOST LIKELY TO BE PRESENT)
 ALWAYS HAVE A DEDICATED ALS AMBULANCE
ON SCENE FOR FIREFIGHTER REHAB
 REMEMBER: DON’T OVER EXERT YOURSELF!
 UNLIKE ATHLETES, FIREFIGHTERS ARE NOT GIVEN
A CHANCE TO WARM UP PRIOR TO EXERTING
THEMSELVES
 WE OFTEN GO FROM PERIODS OF REST OR
SLEEPING TO IMMEADIATELY PLACING OUR
BODIES IN STRESSFUL SITUATIONS
 TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEALTH AND NEVER TRY TO
“TOUGH IT OUT”. IF YOU EXPERIENCE ANY KIND OF
MEDICAL EMERGENCY WHILE PERFORMING
FIREFIGTING OR RESCUE ACTIVITIES, SEEK HELP
IMMEADIATELY!
