    A semiconductor diode is a device made of n-type and p-type semiconductor materials joined together, allowing current to flow easily in only one direction. It works by having a depletion region at the junction between the n-type and p-type materials that forms a barrier to current flowing in one direction. Diodes can be used as rectifiers to convert alternating current into direct current by only allowing current to flow during one half of the alternating cycle.
