questions. Bring laptop to class and every
class after this (library has check out).
7/3 Discussion of reading. Distribution of
literacy project.
Read Scribner, Literacy in Three
Metaphors, pp. 6 - top of 15 (PDF on
Moodle).
7/4 University closed, no class. Enjoy your holiday!
Week Two
7/7 Discussion of reading. Idea invention for
narrative.
Read Brandts Sponsors of Literacy, pp. 6-
9 (PDF on Moodle).
7/8 Discussion of reading and multimodal
writing.
Read Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of
a Part-Time Indian , pp. 1-53.
7/9 In class writing day. Workshopping
workshop.
You will look at example narratives in
class.
7/10 Peer Response Workshop Bring complete draft of literacy narrative to
class.
7/11 Discussion of reading and group work. In-

Read Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of
a Part-Time Indian , pp. 54-98.
Week Three
7/14 In-Class Mapping (Alexie and individual) Bring Alexie's book. First draft of literacy
narrative is due to Moodle.
7/15 In-Class Mapping (Individual)
7/16 Mid-Term reflection in class - Working on
Portfolio
7/17 Presentation of Alexie maps. Literacy maps (Alexie and Individual) are
due.
7/18 Introduction to discourse communities
project. Discussion of lecture on Swales.
Week Four
7/21 Discussion of reading. Identity and
discourse communities.
Read Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of
a Part-Time Indian , pp. 99-168.
7/22 Idea invention and observation notes. How
do we draw conclusions from what we
see?
7/23 Conferences Meet in my office.
7/24 Interviews and Artifacts - Analyzing what
people say and write.
Choose to either interview or collect
artifacts for your project.
7/25 Writing ethnographies. Observation notes due to Moodle. Conduct
interview or collect artifacts over the
weekend.
Week Five

Oranization/planning.

7/29 Discourse communities and belonging. Read Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of

7/30 Peer Response Workshop Bring draft of ethnography to class.
7/31 Portfolio compilation and reflection. First draft of ethnography is due to Moodle.
