Allegory in Of Mice and Men

Directions: Anlayze the images in the first column and answer the question in the second
column. AS YOU READ Of Mice and Men, answer the question in the third column.
Allegory - a narrative in which characters and action represent concepts different from the literal meaning of
the story. If Of Mice and Men is an allegory, each character should represent something different, in this case, a
common person in society.
1. Symbol - something that on the surface is its literal self but which also has another meaning or even several
meanings. Each of the characters in Of Mice and Men symbolizes a group in society.
Directions: Write a paragraph or an essay explaining how Of Mice and Men is an allegory. The topic sentence
should state the title of the work and something about the ranch being a miniature model of society. The
paragraph should include two characters and what they symbolize, with analysis.
What Is a Topic Sentence?
The topic sentence contains the central idea around which a paragraph is developed. A good one has the
following six characteristics:
2. It introduces the topic of a paragraph without announcing it.
3. It hooks the reader.
4. It introduces the author and title of the text.
5. It uses thought-provoking words.
6. It provides a transition from the previous paragraph.
Not all topic sentences will contain every single characteristic. A writer should strive for the ideal; the ideal,
however, is not always ideal.
