ROAD HIERARCHY

Categorizes roads according to their functions and capacities


FREEWAY
Expressways
These roads provide largely uninterrupted travel, often using partial or full
access control, and are designed for high speeds
ARTERIALS
are the core of the regional road network.
the primary function of an arterial road is to deliver traffic from collector
roads to freeways or expressways.
Arterials also typically have controlled intersections with traffic signals.
PRIMARY ARTERIAL ROADS
Main roads other than motorways and expressways oining significant centres
of population and!or providing for national and inter"regional traffic flow.
SECONDARY ARTERIAL ROADS
#oads oining smaller centres of population, oining larger centres of
population to near$y primary arterials or linking $etween primary arterials
COLLECTOR ROAD
Collects traffic from adacent neigh$ourhoods and delivers that traffic to
arterial roads.
These streets generally carry more than %,&&& cars per day and are used $y
cars, trucks, walkers, $ikers, and $uses for school and pu$lic transportation.
LOCAL ROADS
provide direct access to residential, commercial, industrial and institutional
land uses. They complete the road network and are the most numerous type of
road carrying the least amount of traffic.
