Impact of Nearwork Activity on Visual Acuity
Among Junior High School Students in Jatinangor
Abstract
Background : At least 01 million productive2aged adults 3aged 4201 years old5
and ( million children 3aged 121 years old5 have visual impairment due to
uncorrected refractive error! since it is 6eing the main cause of visual impairment
in children worldwide and third cause of 6lindness in any age in Indonesia'
Nearwork activity is estimated as one of environtmental risk factor causing this
refractive error' 7his study was conducted to know the impact of nearwork
activity on visual acuity among *unior high school students in Jatinangor'
Methods : 7his study was conducted in *unior high schools Jatinangor! using
cross sectional method' 80 su6*ects were screened for visual impairment using
RAA9 tum6ling / chart and assesed for nearwork activity using :uestionnaire2
guided interview method after informed concent had 6een o6tained'
Results : 7otal diopter hours of nearwork activity 6etween group with visual
acuity more than 4-; and group with visual acuity less than 4-; had no
significant difference 3P<=!(#85! with latter group had less time2spent in near
work activity' Similarly! each activity such as reading! watching 7V! and using
computer had no significant difference either! e>cept for playing games where
group with 6etter visual acuity had shown significantly longer time spent than
another group 3P<='=;5'
Conclusions ? Nearwork activity does not have impact on visual acuity since there
is no significant difference in time spent and diopter hours of nearwork activity
6etween group with visual acuity @4-; and group with visual acuity A4-;!
e>cept for playing games'
