Introduction
Network Society Research (NSR) is a non profit that organizes the activities around the
Network Society Project.
This document describes the innovative Decentralized Application (DApp) model on which
NSR based and the consequences on how it operates, overcoming the constraints of
traditional fundraising activities.
There will be a brief description of the various concepts underlying the DApp model, without
assuming familiarity with them by the reader. However, for a deeper understanding of their
robust mathematical underpinnings we refer to the materials listed in the relevant appendix.
The ubiquitous availability of novel infrastructure components makes it possible to leverage
their functions for unparalleled efficiency and rich feature sets in ways that are revolutionary.
Reliable mechanical power through vapor engines first and electricity later allowed
widespread industrialization. The Internet, the smartphone and the various open software
layers associated with them are now making possible the creation and rapid distribution of
new ways of organizing information.

Preparing for the coming social infrastructure phase change
A recent mathematical invention, the Blockchain, made it possible to implement provably
reliable networks of collaboration among parties that did not need to enter into direct or
mediated trust relationships. The first implementation of this is Bitcoin, which is becoming
evermore popular as a payment mechanism without the need of a centralized authority. The
usefulness of the Blockchain however goes beyond this, and the DApp model leverages its
features, extending them and leveraging them in innovative directions..
The Network Society Token
The various stakeholders in the Network Society Project express their passion, apply their
skills, and further its goals on a worldwide basis, according to their respective availability.
Their participation is rewarded through the algorithmic distribution and verifiable assignment
of a digital token, called the Network Society Token.
Traditionally in the world of cryptocurrencies this would be called the Network Society Coin.
Here we avoid this naming convention in order to make sure that the reader and the holders
of the tokens are not unduly steered towards the associations of transactional value,
purchases, that this would engender.
Network Society App
The components of the Network Society Project, described in the Network Society
Manifesto, comprise, among others:
1. a series of principles forming a solid theoretical foundation;
2. concrete practices of experiential learning organized around its eight pillars;
3. ongoing activities of information collection, curation, and sharing in the local and global
communities;
4. documented APIs (Application Programmer’s Interfaces) that allow the development of
an ecosystem of solutions based on the information above.
These components are all accessed by stakeholders in the project through a mobile
application, as well as its corresponding web components, that organizes and traces a user’s
activity in reading, contributing, curating, distributing and in general leveraging the actionable
information provided through the Network Society. Each of these activities are measured and
appropriately rewarded by the algorithms that assign Network Society Tokens to the user.
The application is also the wallet securely storing the tokens, and allows their transfer from
one user to an other in a manner that, as described in the introduction, is itself decentralized
and does not need a central authority to be reliably carried out.

Implications for funding, development and participation
The initial supporters of the non profit Network Society Research are not only going to
provide grants and sponsorships in the traditional way customary in the non profit world.
Their contributions, at their respective levels, are going to be rewarded with the assignment of
a proportional number of tokens. At the release of the Network Society App, these
associated tokens will be the direct representation of the support given by the initial sponsors
to the project.
The efforts of the developers and designers behind the Network Society App are going to be
similarly rewarded through the assignment of tokens. It is natural, and necessary, that those
directly providing services to Network Society Research also receive a payment for these
services through traditional monetary compensation. However, it is expected that, with the
development of the project and the diffusion of the app these can be minimized, and finally
eliminated without at all diminishing the value received.
All users of the Networks Society App participate in creating value through their simple
activities of installing, consulting, recommending the app to others, as well as through the
more advanced steps of validating, rating, curating information, or the collection and input of
new pieces of information in the various relevant areas of the application. Consequently,
contrary to what is diffused practice in previous business models, the mere recognition of this
value creation through the assignment of tokens to the users is sufficient, and no further
profiling of users, data brokerage of these profiles, or in general controversial, exploitative,
privacy infringing monetization is needed.
The developer ecosystem that raises through the programmatic use of the curated data
feeds of the Network Society App is itself a bearer of value, making the use of the app, the
collection and curation of data, and the tokens themselves more useful.
Closing The Virtuous Circle
The progressive and accelerating spreading of the Network Society App, its various uses, the
depth of information it contains all concur to accrue usefulness to the Network Society
Tokens associated with them. It is in the nature of the Blockchain based digital network
systems that the various units defined composing them, the so called cryptocurrencies, are
interchangeable, and that the rates of this exchange are not fixed, but vary dynamically. Each
stakeholder as a consequence in the Network Society App ecosystem is able to constantly
verify and leverage the value created and act according to the needs that at any given
moment arise, holding the tokens, accumulating them with further participation and

acquisition, or for any reason and with no hindrance whatsoever, proceed to exchange them
with other units in the various networks.
The simplest and most common of these exchanges is likely the one with Bitcoin, which in
turn has a deep market and exchange volume with fiat currencies. The Network Society
Tokens, proportionally associated with the participation in the Network Society App’s
activities, reward positive behavior, and sustain and fuel both the Network Society Project,
and the non profit Network Society Research.
