Pressure on Production
▪ Crude designs had been
constructed
▪ Planes had potential as a game
changer
▪ Both the Allied Powers and
Central Powers worked to
produce aerial weapons

Initial Invention
The Avro 504 was the first
plane flown by the British
Army and one of the most
common fighter planes during
World War 1. It seated two
people and had no
parachutes. More people died
during the training with this
plane than in deployed flight.
Initially these planes were
used for scouting and
photography. Later, pilots
began carrying guns.
Biplane Engines

• 80 Horsepower
• Stationary crank
shaft
• Simple, good
ratios
• No proper
throttle
• Ex. Sopwith Pup

engine in U.S.
• Introduced 1915
• Water cooled
• Used at end of
WW1
• Similar to Curtiss
JN-4, “Jenny”

Uses of Aircraft
▪ “The airplane is useless for the purpose of war.” – British General
▪ Photography
▪ Reconnaissance
▪ Projectiles
▪ Handgun
▪ Lewis Gun (cockpit, angled, upper wing, Propellers accounting)

Conclusion:
During WW1, there was a lot of pressure to develop aircraft from
novelty to necessity. Planes were used for press coverage,
reconnaissance, airship fighting, and eventually, full on combat.
