Communicative competence

The ability to use and understand the language correctly by communicating taking into account
syntax, grammar, vocabulary social rules of the language etc.
Its components:
1. Linguistic or grammatical competence: consists in the correct use of the language based in
grammar, phonetics and syntax.
2. Sociolinguistic competence: consists in knowing the social rules of the language like formality,
politeness etc. and have a cultural reference like idioms expressions.
3. Discourse competence: understand how ideas are connected through different patterns like
sequencing of words, structure etc. to give a correct message and context.
4. Strategic Competence: using techniques or procedures for a language production to achieve
conversational fluency and overcome language gaps.
