POPCORN LAB

PROCEDURE
1. Cover the bottom of a 600 mL beaker with vegetable oil. Cover beaker with a foil lid. Poke small
holes in the lid.
2. Determine the mass of the beaker, oil, and a foil lid. Use significant figures.
3. Add exactly 100 kernels to the beaker. Place foil lid back on beaker.
4. Determine the new mass. Use sig figs.
5. Adjust the burner to a low flame to avoid burning the popcorn.
6. Heat the kernels until they have finished popping. Immediately turn off the heat and move the
beaker to a hot pad to cool.
7. After the beaker has cooled sufficiently, determine the new mass of the beaker and popcorn. Use sig
figs.
8. Place a smaller beaker on top of the popcorn and read the volume of the popcorn. Use sig figs.
9. Count the number of unpopped kernels.
10. Throw the popcorn and unpopped kernels in the garbage and rinse out your beaker.
