COMMUNITY
Giles County Public Schools serves the educational
needs of Giles County, VA. The school system
serves approximately 2,430 students, and consists
of 3 elementary/middle schools, 2 high schools, 1
technology center, and 1 alternate education
program. In addition, GCPS is as member of the
Southwest Virginia Governors School for Math,
Science, and Technology. Narrows High School
serves several small towns in the county, the largest
being Narrows with approximately 2000 residents.
Students in the rural residential areas of the Western
and Central Districts of Giles County are also
served by Narrows High School. Celanese
Corporation is the largest employer in the county.
Many residents travel to nearby counties for
employment.

CURRICULUM
The academic curriculum is organized on a two
semester, 4*4 block schedule. Students take four
90-minute semester long block classes that meet
daily each semester.

Each semester is broken up into three six weeks
grading periods. The semester average is
determined by each 6 weeks counting for 2/7 and an
exam counting for 1/7.

One credit is awarded for most subjects if the
course is completed successfully. Giles Tech Center
Courses carry three to four credits, and NRCC
courses carry credit per 3 semester hours.

Honors Classes are weighted and indicated with an
H, NRCC, or College on the transcript. Weighted
courses are as follows: A = 5; B = 4; C = 3. Honors
classes offered are: English 11H, Advanced
Algebra/Trig, Math Analysis, and all AP, NRCC, and
SWVGS courses.

AP Classes are offered through Virtual Virginia and
are open to students enrolled in the Virginia Early
College Scholars program.

SUPPLEMENTAL PROGRAMS
The Giles County Technology Center (GCTC)
enables juniors and seniors to prepare for skilled jobs
and further their education.

The Southwest Virginia Governors School
(SWVGS) for Science, Mathematics, and
Technology is a two year college level instructional
program designed to give intellectually gifted high
school students the opportunity to achieve their
academic potential by providing an accelerated and
enriched science and mathematics learning
environment. The SWVGS is located in Pulaski
County and serves students in eight school divisions
across Southwest Virginia, including Giles County.
Entry into the SWVGS is selective and competitive.

In partnership with New River Community College
(NRCC) selected juniors and seniors are able to
enroll in distance learning and dual enrollment classes
to earn college credits. The following dual enrollment
classes are available in the 2014-2015 school year:

Psychology (PSY 200), &
Sociology (SOC 200) .................. 3 sem hrs each
*English (ENG 111 & 112) ......... 6 sem hrs
**Government (PLS135 & 136) .. 6 sem hrs

Note: Students may take these courses to satisfy the
* English 12, **U.S. & VA Government, and ***U.S.
& VA History course requirements.

computation; exceptions are those courses which
earned high school credit. GPA is computed at
the conclusion of each semester.

RANK-IN-CLASS
Giles County Public Schools and Narrows High
School do not rank students. Honor graduates are
determined by a final GPA of 3.45. Distinguished
graduates are determined by a final GPA of 4.0
and above.
